9X5 Lord of the Flies
Plot: A disgruntled teen commands killer flies.
Yet another crappy 'teen angst' episode where nothing particularly interesting happens and there's a lot of incredibly trite and generic stuff going on. This series format of Doggett and Reyes investigate and occaisonally call in Scully for help is a horribly uninteresting one. The only saving aspects of this episode were the melodramatic entomologist who hits on Scully, and the teaser's Jackass parody. When will they learn?
9X4 4-D *MISSED*
9X3 Daemonicus
Plot: Doggett and Reyes investigate demonic killings
and consult an insane inmate.
Very good standalone with a great villain and some really moody and creepy touches. On the other hand it's another "Silence of the Lambs" rip off, another evil psychic bad guy torments our characters on their personal details episode. I really don't like seeing Scully in such a minor supporting role, is the whole season going to be like this? Kobold was an excellent portrayed creepy character. I appreciate calling into question Doggett's motives for working on the X-Files. Like last season's "Patience" a great opening standalone that connects to the thematic situation of the season at hand, but something tells me after this it's going to get crappy quick. Good ending!
9X2 Nothing Important Happened
Today II (part 2 of 2)
Plot: A renegade super soldier leads the agents
to the origins of the program.
Pretty good episode, though making the Hybrids suddenly products of the government instead of Colonists seems completely inconsistent with last year. These super soldiers are pretty cool though, immortal, water breathing, don't need sleep (a nice nod to "Sleepless"), though the neck ridges are again such a dead give away. Containing the water supply to create an entire generation of super soldiers is pretty insane, but that was the lie... right? The shoot-out between Doggett and Rohrer, and then the super human fight between McMahon and Rohrer were all really neat, best thing of the episode. I like the agents running around on the ship about to explode, though its been done on this show so many times now, the old destroy the evidence to end the episode, yeesh. That last Doggett-Kersh scene where he quotes King George ignoring the revolution to say "nothing important happened today" was unexpectedly powerful. And we kinda learn why Mulder left!
9X1 Nothing Important Happened
Today (part 1 of 2)
Plot: The agents deal with the fallout of Scully's birth and the super
soldiers and Mulder's departure.
Good episode but nothing spectacular, decent for an interim episode. While Mulder's departure will forever leave the show mundane, I do like the ensemble feel to it. The new title sequence was great, and Skinner *finally* becomes a regular! Mulder's abrupt disappearance really should be explained, what's the point of making it a mystery if Scully knows. Xena/McMahen was an interesting pseudo-villain character. AD Follmer came off as another scum bag, but it's nice to give Reyes something to do. Doggett investigating Kersh was a surprise, but it wasn't very smart of him, what the hell did he expect to happen? So the baby's a telekinetic, interesting... Nice to see the Lone Gunmen, and a little reference to the final episode of their short-lived show. The final chase in the water treatment plant was kinda neat, and that final shot of McMahen dragging Doggett down into the depths of the black water was really creepy.
