My Eyes Adored You
By katrinka
Tracy Vetter knew from the first moment she saw Nick Knight that
she had to have him. It was his eyes that attracted her first. They
reminded her ofthe sky just before a rain storm. A blue so dark that
they looked almost black. Detective Knight was a turn-on, there was
no denying that.
She kept her feelings to herself as she tried to get to know her new
partner. He was the type that kept his feelings to himself. Occasionally
she would catch him staring into the air, at nothing.
Both detectives worked in the Toronto police department. It had been
hard for Tracy to move up the ranks, being a cop was still very
much a man's job. Her father was another reason it was hard for
her to get respect. He was the police commissioner.
Two months after they became partners, they were on a stake-out. They
had been assigned to watch an empty house to see if the owner would
return. They sat by the window, their chairs beside each other. It was a
Beautiful warm night in which she'd loved to take a walk. That was
if she was off duty. Nick had some classical music playing on the radio.
He looked more sexy than usual, wearing a jet black turtle neck shirt
and a black leather jacket.
"Can I ask you something?" he asked, glancing at her.
"Sure, go ahead," she shrugged.
"Do you even own a dress, or do you like always wearing a T-shirt and
jeans?"
Tracy didn't know what to say. She wasn't sure if it was an insult or
not.She glanced down at her clothes. Then she noticed the smile that
tugged at his lips. "So you think I should dress up?"
"I think you would look very lovely in a dress." Tracy read the desire
in Nick's eyes. "Your jeans are a little distracting to me. Your very
beautiful." It shook Tracy down to the core to know that Nick thought
she was attractive. She decided to take the chance. She kissed him. She
was surprised by the fierceness of Nick's response.
Then just as suddenly, her partner pulled away from her."Don't take this
personally, but I don't think we should become involved."
"I don't understand, I thought you wanted me."
"I do, but I found it isn't a good thing for partners to become involved
sexually," He ran his finger down Tracy's cheek. "Personal feeling can
get in the way. What if we broke up? It could affect our performance
together."
Tracy's feelings were stung, but she knew he was right. "Thanks for
being so honest,"
Nick kissed her again, gently. Then just as suddenly pulled away from
her, she could see regret in his eyes. "We better get back to work."
* * *
The months passed. Tracy wasn't sure when she realized she had fallen
in love with him. Just one day knew she was. She still wondered if her
partner cared for her. The easy way that Nick was always touching her
almost made up for the fact that they weren't lovers.
Then she met Javier Vachon. He was a man who reminded her so much of
Nick, not in looks, but in personality. The way that he kept his
feelings in that made him seem cold. She had put all her feelings for Nick
into the relationship. The affair had been short, intense, and then it
ended.
She had stood there in the airport, watching his plane fly away, tears
streaming down her face. She felt as if she hadn't just lost Vachon, but
Nick too.
Then from out of nowhere Nick was there, telling her that he would
drive her home.
Nick took Tracy to her apartment. "Do you mind if I come in?"
"Please, I don't feel like being alone,"
Nick took the key from Tracy, and unlocked the door. Tracy flicked on
the lights and sat down on the couch. Nick walked over to her bar. "Want
me to get you a drink?"
"Sure," The place still reminded her of Vachon. This would never be home
anymore.
Nick poured her a drink then he went over to the couch and sat down. As
he handed her the drink he said, "I am sorry about Vachon,"
"I am too, but what can you do?" She took a long drink. It was the wine
that Javier had bought for her. She didn't ask Nick if he wanted a
drink. He never drank wine.
Nick reached out and touched a lock of her hair, stroking it a bit.
Tracy had never felt so foolish in her life. She should be hurting for
Javier,
but she wasn't. Nick was the one she wanted. She turned to Nick,
deciding to take the plunge. She kissed her friend, her partner. His lips
where silky smooth. She could feel Nick tense up.
Tracy pulled away from him. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that."
"You're..."
"I'm a damned fool," she looked away from her confidant.
"You didn't want to kiss me?"
"I did," she stopped herself. "I didn't mean to say that."
"You shouldn't be sorry for your feelings," Nick said gently. "How long
have you felt this way about me?"
"A long time...I can't remember when," Tracy looked away. "I know we had
an agreement. Nothing's going to be the same anymore, is it?"
"No, I guess not," he almost whispered.
"What do you mean?"
"If I could choose one woman for a commitment, I would pick you,"
Tracy turned to Nick, surprised. "Really?"
"You should have told me earlier," he stroked her hair. "Do you know how
hard it's been to not let you know I love you? When Vachon moved in, I
thought I'd lost you forever."
Finally it dawned on Tracy. "You were jealous?"
"Every time I thought of the two of you together....I wanted to tell him
you were mine, but you aren't are you?"
"You were the one that said we shouldn't become involved," she reminded
him.
"I know, I've always regretted saying that. I wanted to tell you I
changed my mind, but there never seemed to be a chance." There was a
long pause between them. Nick's hand dropped. He turned from his
partner. He picked up Tracy's glass and went into the kitchen.
* * *
Tracy could hear Nick clanging around in the kitchen, opening and
shutting cabinets. So this was what her partner was going to do, avoid
the situation.
As she entered the kitchen, Tracy found Nick putting away the
dishes that she had washed the night before. He didn't look at Tracy,
just brushed passed her as if she wasn't there.
Finally Tracy spoke. "You'll never lose me."
Nick looked at his partner. He was holding a plate. "Are you sure?"
"I love you, I don't leave people I love."
Nick's hands began to trembling so hard that Tracy was afraid he would
drop the plate. She went over to him and took the plate away from him,
setting it down on the counter. Fear was etched on Nick's face. Nick had
left his guard down, a wall he had worked so hard to keep up.
Tracy touched his cheek, and kissed her partner. This time, the action
was allowed. Nick opened his mouth to her, as they kissed, Nick's arms
went around her, tighter than he ever had before, until she felt as if
she would be crushed.
"I love you," He whispered.
"I love you too,"
"Good," Nick kissed her again. Tracy knew that no matter what happened,
she would always have Nick Knight with her.
