The Wrath of Natalie
Part 1 of 1
Renee Miller
"Are you Natalie Lambert?" The young delivery boy asked, nervously shuffling
papers and balancing a large package.
Natalie looked up from her computer and smiled, "Last time I checked."
The boy looked confused for a moment then awareness dawned, "Oh yeah," he
laughed embarrassed, "a joke, okay. It's my last day, I'm a little out
there."
"They made you work on Christmas Day?" Natalie asked surprised.
"Well, yeah. Had to stick it to me one last time." He mumbled.
Natalie signed for the parcel and got her purse, "Here you go." She handed him
a tip.
He was amazed at her generosity, "Oh wow! Gee this is great, thanks!" He
handed her the parcel and gushed, "Thanks a lot!"
Natalie smiled after his retreating figure, then turned her attention to her
package, "What on earth could this be?" Upon opening it she found, staring
back at her, a four foot tall toy bullfrog dressed in full Santa garb.
Attached to one of it's webbed feet was a "squeeze me" sticker. Natalie did
as she was instructed. The thing started to sing.
As she stared stupefied at the ridiculous creature she noticed a card was
hanging from a gold thread which encircled it's neck. She pulled it off and
opened it, 'Merry Christmas from Nick' it read in computer generated print.
"Why that . . ." Insulting vulgarities ran through Natalie's mind, none of
them vile enough to suit her mood at the moment.
An idea suddenly occurred to her. Grabbing the frog and the re-sealable
packaging it had arrived in, she tore off after the delivery boy. She caught
up with him just outside of the building where he stood staring blankly into
the back of his truck, "Excuse me!" she yelled as she ran up, "There's been a
mistake!"
"Mistake?" He looked down at his pad and frowned.
"Yes," she said, "isn't one of your deliveries to Miss Janette DuCharme at
'The Raven'?"
He flipped pages and squinted, "Well, yeah here it is, my next stop." He
leaned into the truck and plucked out a small box.
A smile slowly spread across Natalie's face, some might have described it as a
very evil smile. "I'm so glad I caught you. There's been a mistake, this" she
held up the frog, "was supposed to be delivered to Ms. DuCharme and that," she
pointed to the package he was holding, "is mine. I just got off the phone
with Mr. Knight."
He looked confused and flipped through his papers again, "Jeez! You know,
this has been the worst job! They send me out on Christmas Day, my last day,
no overtime pay, no bonus even, and they can't even mark the stupid packages
right." He looked at Natalie, "I'm going back there and quitting right now.
I've had enough!" He took the frog and it's packaging from her and handed her
the box he had been holding.
"Oh, but you will deliver that to Jeanette at 'The Raven' won't you?" Natalie
asked pointing to the frog.
"Oh yeah, I'm dropping this off then I'm headin' back to the office and
telling them they can deliver the rest, I'm through!" He started to slip the
frog back into the packaging.
"Wait! Natalie squealed, "We don't want to forget the card." She pulled the
gift card off of the package she was holding and attached it to the frog,
"There, perfect!"
He slipped the frog back into the package and resealed it. "Pretty cool
packaging huh? You can't even tell that it was opened."
"Nope," Natalie replied her smile widening by the minute, "you sure can't."
"Well Ma'am, sorry about the mistake, you have a Merry Christmas now!" He
crawled into his truck and drove off.
Natalie ran back into her office. She sat down at her desk and opened the
package. It contained a glittering ruby surrounded with diamonds suspended on
a beautiful gold chain. She laughed out loud and dialed Nick's apartment.
When his answering machine beeped she cooed seductively, "Oh Nick, thank you
so much for the necklace, it just arrived. I absolutely love it! Oh, by the
way, you should be getting my present any minute now."
A few hours later Nick walked into his apartment and immediately pushed the
'play' button on his answering machine. He smiled in pleased surprise at the
tone in Natalie's voice, until he heard the word 'necklace'.
If it were possible, he would have become pale, "Oh no, if she got the
necklace that means that Janette got . . ."
The machine beeped and went on to the next message a single word that sent
shivers of fear through Nick's very being,
"NICHOLA!!!"
