The Role-Playing Forum was held on Thursday, May 28, 1998, conducted by GM Lady Aelsidhe Linche, with Lady Lyredaen Elerei, and Lord Modrian Longleaf.

[Global Assembly Room]
The room is so full you can see nothing around you! The only thing that you can make out is the stage with a podium on it. A lone light shines down upon the podium.
Obvious exits: out.
Aelsidhe says, "Lets see now."
Aelsidhe says, "OK, I hope you all have some coherent questions to ask."
Aelsidhe grins.
Lyredaen shifts her weight.
Aelsidhe says, "Im not necessarily going to deal with all questions. Try to cover all topics here."
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "You can, but I wont tell you anything"
Aelsidhe grins. Lyredaen takes a drink from her iced Zinger punch. Lyredaen's eyes glaze over slightly and her face pales. Lyredaen is stunned!
Aelsidhe says, "Now lets see."
Lyredaen asks, "Wha?"
Aelsidhe says, "Hehe."
Lyredaen exclaims, "No bread!"
Lyredaen chuckles.
Aelsidhe says, "This is going to be more of a rap session than anything I think."
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "Not like we're discussing mechanics."
Aelsidhe says, "I can dodge with the best of them"
Aelsidhe winks.
Lyredaen whistles a complicated ditty, impressing you with her virtuosity.
Aelsidhe says, "Some idea of the type of thing we'll be talking about." Aelsidhe says, "Names are a good topic too."
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "How about the difference bwteen 'making up a history' and actually having a personality? " Aelsidhe says, "As in "My parents were killed by and I was made their slave and escaped and came here.""
Aelsidhe grins. Aelsidhe nods to Lyle.
Aelsidhe says, "My point, and its usually as above"
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "Im going to shut you all up in a minute."
Aelsidhe smiles.
Aelsidhe says, "All guild questions will be ignoreed unless they are about roleplaying"
Aelsidhe winks.
Aelsidhe waggles her fingers mystically at Quavvy. How nice.
Aelsidhe exclaims, "Now!"
Aelsidhe calls the assembly to order. After a moment the crowd quiets down.
Aelsidhe cackles!
Aelsidhe says, "Now let's see."
Aelsidhe says, "The box is open. You may ASK your questions."
Aelsidhe says, "It wont hold too many at once, but they open up as we go."
Aelsidhe laughs!
Aelsidhe says, "Trubloods says, 'Will forging be mainly for RPing or will it have really good quality weapon possibilities? Also, have a dateline for them?'"
Lyredaen suddenly fades out of sight.
Aelsidhe says, "Okay.. you're out of my league here. Im sure you can use it for roleplaying as you can anything else, but I am not involved with forging or when itll work"
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "Vaeyre says, 'Some OOC is fine, the point of GS is to have fun. What gets annoying, are the arguments on the net, between a "good" role-player, and a "bad role-player", both who are OOC on the net.'"
Aelsidhe says, "That sure is annoying."
Aelsidhe asks, "Well, if a "good roleplayer' is being OOC with someone on the net, they aren't being a good roleplayer are they?"
Lyredaen suddenly fades into sight beside you.
Aelsidhe says, "Responding OOC is frankly, not exactly good roleplaying."
Aelsidhe says, "Not in public anyhow."
Aelsidhe nods to Vaeyre, who stands up to address the assembly.
Aelsidhe says, "You can talk. Sorry"
Vaeyre says, "Thank you."
Aelsidhe blushes a nice shade of off-pink.
Vaeyre asks, "Didn't finish the question. Rest of it is: Maybe take the argument to a private place where they can argue as much as they like?"
Aelsidhe says, "My first forum, forgive me"
Aelsidhe winks.
Aelsidhe nods.
Aelsidhe says, "Exactly. If you have to argue with an OOCer, you should take it private."
Aelsidhe says, "Thats the whole idea."
Aelsidhe says, "If they persist, well it depends how disruptive they are being..."
Aelsidhe says, "If theyre just saying 'as ds' I'd say ignore the snert. If theyre really disruptive, please do report it."
Aelsidhe smiles.
Vaeyre says, "People don't do that. I'm talking about GM prevention or consequences. Some arguments go on for 20 minutes, getting more and more annoying."
Vaeyre says, "Yep. Thank you. Good luck with the forum."
Aelsidhe says, "Then someone should report it if it gets that bad. Dont feel bad about reporting when it's needed, as in someone making a disruptive scene."
Aelsidhe says, "not for 'Joe stole my kill'; :)"
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "If someone is being openly disruptive to many, that ios a valid use of REPORT."
Aelsidhe smiles at Vaeyre.
Aelsidhe says, "One moment..."
Aelsidhe asks, "OK, anymore to this question or shal we move on?"
Vaeyre says, "That's all. Thank you."
Aelsidhe bows to Vaeyre.
Having finished addressing the assembly Vaeyre sits back down.

Aelsidhe says, "Sassee says, 'it seems sorcerers have to have an evil personality to gain role playing awards. nice sorcerers who roleplay by helping out youngings and showing them how to use their magic on new critters and all never seem to have a chance at any awards'"
Aelsidhe smiles.
Aelsidhe says, "Well, i dont think this is true at all."
Aelsidhe says, "Oops sorry"

Aelsidhe says, "I apologise for my slight delays in this my first time"
Aelsidhe giggles.
Aelsidhe says, "I dont think one's profession matters at all in RP awards. I dont know anyone who judges RP by standards of 'are you actinglike your profession'."
Aelsidhe says, "What is more important is if you are acting like your CHARACTER."
Aelsidhe says, "It's possible that some of the high-profile roleplayers are sorcerors. I know some are. That doesnt mean they get more than anyone else because they play evil :)"
Aelsidhe nods to Sassee, who stands up to address the assembly.
Aelsidhe smiles at Sassee.
Aelsidhe says, "One of these times Ill remember to turn that on faster."
Aelsidhe grins.
Sassee says, "Ah, it just seemed that the evil ones seem to be more high profile i guess"
Aelsidhe says, "Ok you can talk"
Sassee says, "nice guys finish lash"
Aelsidhe grins.
Sassee says, "last even"
Aelsidhe says, "Hmm, i think thats more a result of the dramatic types liking to play 'evil'."
Aelsidhe says, "Evil is more dramatic. Villains and all."
Aelsidhe says, "So the do tend to have a high profile :)"

Aelsidhe says, "But that doesnt mean they get more Rpo awards than anyone, as Ive seen"
Aelsidhe says, "They probably tend to exaggerate what they've got, just as much"

Sassee says, "i guess they just brag about it more"

Sassee says, "heh ok, thanks"
Aelsidhe says, "It's the dramatic personality thing. The quieter types are also less likely to announce when they got one."
Aelsidhe winks.
Aelsidhe says, "OK, anything else on this one."

Sassee says, "no, that was it, thank you"
Aelsidhe looks slightly confused, but is getting better.

Aelsidhe bows to Sassee.

Aelsidhe says, "Siclo says, 'what would you consider a good RPer?'"
Aelsidhe smiles.
Aelsidhe says, "Hm, he's left."
Aelsidhe says, "Oh well. i can answer this."

Aelsidhe says, "In general.. I would consider a 'good RPer' one who is consistent. One who takes on their character's personality when they come in here."
Aelsidhe says, "Not so much one who never utters the letters AS DS, but one who has a real personality as a _character_ and sticks with it."
Aelsidhe says, "And reacts to the world as that character."
Aelsidhe says, "The occasional uttering of letters can be forgiven, I think. Its of far less importance than living _in this world_."
Aelsidhe smiles.
Aelsidhe says, "Titaniia says, 'Are we going to see a lot more verbs in the near future?'"
Aelsidhe nods to Titaniia, who stands up to address the assembly.

Aelsidhe says, "Absolutely"

Titaniia says, "I wanna loom over people. "
Aelsidhe says, "You have only seen the begining of it this last week."
Aelsidhe smiles.
Aelsidhe exclaims, "hey thats for GMs!"
Suddenly Aelsidhe looms high above you, striking terror into your very soul!
Aelsidhe grins.
Titaniia exclaims, "hee..I'm taller then most of the GM's!"
Aelsidhe says, "Bounce, fluster,waggle, scratch, pace, do far. Many more coming soon."
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "Er so far."
Aelsidhe says, "Kuromaku, Varevice and I are working on many more, due to popular demand."
Aelsidhe grins.
Titaniia says, "I love it, only thing I'd like to see is have them react more to the race of the character. I find it hard imagining anyone standing after someone my size bounces off them."
Aelsidhe says, "And if there are more youd like to see, the Verb suggestions topic in the BB is a good place to suggest. I read it, and so do many others."
Aelsidhe says, "But yes, you can expect even more verbs very soon. It's something we decided to speed up cause players wanted it."
Aelsidhe says, "We dont ignore you THAT much :)"

Titaniia exclaims, "hee!"

Aelsidhe flings herself against Titaniia, bounces off of her, and giggles madly!
Aelsidhe says, "Oof."

Aelsidhe says, "Porringer says, 'How about a negative RP award? Say, half absorption for an hour or so. 'You feel less aware of yourself, your mind having drifted to other realms.' A negative incentive to compliment the positive incentive given to people who actually stay IC. Also, have these RP awards become less frequent?'"
Aelsidhe nods to Porringer, who stands up to address the assembly.
Aelsidhe says, "Okay..."
Aelsidhe says, "Negative RPs have been discussed for years. We havent found a way to really implement that that would be a good idea."
Aelsidhe says, "See, as I mentioned before, there is a big difference between Not Acting OOC, and Actually Playing a Role."
Aelsidhe says, "The first is all we require."
Aelsidhe says, "And well, the junior snerts who come in singing rap songs on the net, are not the ones who care much about long term advancing :)"
Porringer says, "True, but as in the case of RP awards, it would be the GM's judgement."
Aelsidhe says, "We find it more useful to just cut off their net for a while, or warn them, depending on how bad they are."
Aelsidhe nods.
Aelsidhe says, "But a negative carries more weight than a positive."
Porringer says, "I'd wager some folks never even heard of an RP award."
Aelsidhe says, "I would rather just give out more and more positive ones to the GOOD RPers. I believe in positive reinforcement."
Aelsidhe says, "Lowering a snerts exp does not stop them from being snerts. And we DONT want to punish those who WANT to RP and dont quite have the idea."
Aelsidhe says, "So basically, the negatives, would go to people who didnt give a hoot anyhow."
Aelsidhe says, "Theyd instill negative feelings without a positive result."
Aelsidhe says, "More positive ones would be better."
Aelsidhe says, "Those who give a damn wouldnt get negatives, so it would not be a teaching tool."
Aelsidhe grins.
Porringer says, "Hm, perhaps, if more positive ones are really in the works."
Aelsidhe says, "Well.. we give out a lot more now from what ive seen, than about a year ago."
Aelsidhe says, "More of us clamor to pay attention to RP."
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "There are probably twice as many online with Rps on now, at any given time, than there were a year ago."
Porringer says, "Ran across two folks on the isle the other day, discussing who was better, the Jazz or Sonics."
Aelsidhe says, "You dont notice that from your invidiual point of view of course, but it's true."
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe nods.
Aelsidhe says, "If we see that, in public, we WILL strip any RP they may have on."
Porringer says, "One was in their 60's, so obviously there are oldsters who don't give a damn."
Aelsidhe says, "Weve always had the option to take away the positive reinforcement."
Aelsidhe smiles.
Aelsidhe nods.
Porringer says, "Well, I'd wage this particular wizard, she has never had an award."
Porringer says, "::whistle::"
Aelsidhe says, "You can talk about the Sonics in a latched room just like anything else that shouldnt be public."
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe begins chuckling at Porringer.
Aelsidhe says, "Well we're not naming names here and I will not talk about specific people, unless you want to use one as a _positive_ example."
Aelsidhe grins.
Porringer says, "Oh, this was just south of the gate. Believe me, it was not beautiful to see."
Aelsidhe says, "I know what you mean tho, of course its possible to advance without em."
Aelsidhe says, "I think a lot of people who are OOC, dont really how MUCH better they can do if they RP."
Aelsidhe chuckles.
Aelsidhe says, "er realise."
Aelsidhe says, "If you are really consistent over history.. it can be a LOT."
Aelsidhe smiles.
Aelsidhe asks, "OK, anything else on this one?"
Porringer says, "Hm, well, it seems talkative folk are more likely to get an award."
Aelsidhe says, "Well, if you mean someone who actually speaks and acts out their character to make it come alive, as opposed to someone who sits quietly and imagines they are their character sitting there quietly, yeah probably"
Aelsidhe smiles at Porringer.
Aelsidhe says, "A big part of it is You are making the world come alive with your character. We make the world."
Aelsidhe says, "A person who sits quietly may be totally IC, but they cannot expect to be noticed a whole lot."
Aelsidhe says, "That doesnt mean they arent enjoying themselves tho :)"
Porringer says, "Exactly."
Aelsidhe says, "And they probably are the ones who dont give a damn about getting an RP either."
Aelsidhe grins.

Aelsidhe says, "And if they are in character and ARE noticed, they will get em when noticed."

Aelsidhe says, "Quavvy says, 'I think GS should be a more strictly roleplayed game. On the website, Simutronic's logo says "Such and such years of quality roleplaying games". How good is the quality, when folks can say what they want (from what I've seen), with impunity. '"
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "it's a fine line."
Aelsidhe wonders if she should let Quavvy talk.

Quavvy says, "Well, it's very plain and simple, to be honest.."
Aelsidhe says, "Should we strictly STRITLY enforce RP is the question."
Aelsidhe asks, "Eh?"
Quavvy says, "Absolutely should."
Aelsidhe says, "No."
Aelsidhe says, "The enforcement is at the line of not being OOC."
Quavvy says, "No OOC. None. Hmph. You say AS, you get a warning."
Quavvy says, "TTM? Banned for life."
Aelsidhe says, "You can be warned for being OOC."

Aelsidhe looks over at Quavvy and shakes her head.
Aelsidhe says, "Aint gonna happen."
Aelsidhe grins.
Quavvy says, "Well.."
Quavvy says, "You draw a "fine line", with everything else...but this one seems pretty thick, to me. "
Aelsidhe says, "Frankly I am of the camp that is lenient on the 'saying AS' issue."
Aelsidhe says, "If you're in character, 'AS' could be an abbreviation for the magic"
Aelsidhe shrugs.
Quavvy says, "Right Aelsidhe...but it's really getting out of hand...for example.."
Aelsidhe says, "I care more about the character. If youre talking about the Lakers, you're OOC."
Aelsidhe says, "Thats the line."
Quavvy says, "Those who enter the game for the first time...will pretty well get a crystal amulet, their first day."
Aelsidhe says, "Oops."

Quavvy says, "They'll get on the net, and they'll hear nothing but garbage. 90% at least."
Aelsidhe says, "Youre not _required_ to play a role. ONly to not be OOC."
Aelsidhe says, "Thats a net problem."
Quavvy asks, "The net has nothing to do with roleplaying?"
Aelsidhe says, "Youre required to not disrupt others.. not to have a detailed character history."
Aelsidhe says, "it does, but the net problem is mainly the amount of it."
Aelsidhe says, "Selling items, annoying as it is, is not OOC."
Menippus just went out.
Aelsidhe says, "We try to fix the mechnics, ie the table change."
Aelsidhe says, "Which the net spammers complained about."

Quavvy says, "Well...I come here, and I see a lot of AS/Ds, which is fine, in moderation. But when you get it in such...mass."
Aelsidhe says, "Selling items is not OOC tho. That aint a RP issue, thats a net mechanics issue.,"
Aelsidhe nods.
Aelsidhe says, "Excatly."
Aelsidhe says, "Thats my point. Its not a matter of RP its a matter of noise overload."
Quavvy says, "heh, I had some fella come up to me and tell me I wasn't the original "player" of Quavvy the other day."
Quavvy says, "I reported, nothing was done."
Aelsidhe says, "A few initials isnt GOOD RP but it isnt BAD RP as such either, if its talking about something in game."
Quavvy says, "That's blatent out of character harassment, and nothing was done. I ended up killing the guy. "
Aelsidhe says, "Well I personally totally divorce in game from OOC. OOC bugs me. Abbreviting IC wont get you huge awards, but wont kill you."
Aelsidhe nods.
Aelsidhe says, "But the subject was net noise :)"
Aelsidhe grins.
Quavvy says, "You heard what I said up there too though, silly."
Aelsidhe says, "And the point was thats mainly a net mechanics problem really. If you only heard TTM once, it wouldnt bug you."
Aelsidhe says, "And nobodys gonna get an RP for saying it but, it aint as bad as yelling 'GO LAKERS" in TS."
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe says, "The net IS a problem."
Aelsidhe says, "I think the table change cut noise about 25%."
Aelsidhe says, "Seriously. That is not a small thing."
Aelsidhe says, "People would sit on macros at tables, untouchable."
Aelsidhe says, "75% is still a lot of noise, but it is down a noticeable amount."
Aelsidhe grins.
Aelsidhe asks, "Ok anything else on this one Quavvy?"
Quavvy says, "Welp like I said, someone telling me I've been "bought" in front of a crowd, is an offense that should be looked into. There are others that I know that have been harassed OOC, reported, and nothing was done."
Aelsidhe says, "Thats a different issue."
Aelsidhe says, "Of COURSE thats not roleplaying."
Aelsidhe says, "Whats done about OOC harrassment, well Mhorigan will be doing a Policy forum soon"
Aelsidhe grins.
Quavvy says, "Course not. But it's the lack of action taken against non roleplaying such as that, is the issue."

Aelsidhe says, "its a given that OOC harrassment isnt RP :)"

Aelsidhe says, "Arwen says, 'Any consideration being given to taking away RP awards when someone announces they have recieved one, or goes immediately OOC after getting one. I've seen it happen so often.'"
Aelsidhe says, "If we give someone an RP and they immediately announce it"

Aelsidhe says, "They will almost ALWAYS have it removed on the spot."

Aelsidhe says, "The exception is people who never got one and ask what it was cause they honestly dont know."
Aelsidhe grins.
Arwen says, "I've seen exceptions to that...I'm afraid that perhaps not all the GM's follow that."
Aelsidhe says, "People who go Whee I gotta RP! probably dont, as soon as they said that."
Aelsidhe grins.

Arwen says, "Yes, thank you."
Aelsidhe says, "Well, they dont know if it was removed"
Aelsidhe says, "And if someone wasnt watching by the time they announced it, they may slip away with it"

Ceranis says, "Well, seeing as this is a forum, I thought it would be a topic for discussion."
Ceranis says, "I haven't been to one before, you see."

Aelsidhe says, "The subtle things, I'd say, come from totally being your character when playing."

You hear the voice of Modrian ask, "Mind if I comment on this one, milady Aelsidhe?"
Ceranis says, "Agreed. What I think of when I think of such things are things like..."
Aelsidhe says, "If you're being Magedude and not being Joe Smith, and reacting as Magedude does, not as Joe Smith does."
Aelsidhe nods. Ceranis says, "Always having a drink in one's hand."

Ceranis says, "Making relationships between wounds and actual methods of behaving.."
Aelsidhe says, "Exactly..."
Ceranis says, "Like Merlock just said to me, people hugging Aonghus when he has a chest wound."

Ceranis says, "But I thought perhaps we might hear more examples..."

Modrian says, "Back when folks didn't have to hold a box when picking it, like we do now..."
Modrian says, "You'd just drop the box on the ground."

Modrian says, "But there was at least one meticulous player who always knelt before he dropeed the box."

Ceranis says, "Yes. When I put the question in the box, I had in mind also activities..."
Ceranis says, "Like the occasional dart game...and dramatizing it."
Aelsidhe says, "its the little things that make a character. Think of the objects around you as real things."
Aelsidhe nods.

I would rather see unique titles awarded to people as very special roleplaying awards. Someone who roleplays a knight might be given a 'Sir' title, a cleric might be given the title 'High Priest', et cetera.'"
