The Long Patrol

Martin the Warrior

Pages: 375
Rating: ********

I think this is a wonderful first book chronologically in the Redwall series. It's about the main character or theme in all of the Redwall books, Martin the Warrior (hence the name of the book!), and the battles he fought and the thoughts he had to think of to bring peace to the land from the evil Badrang and his minions. Along the way, he comes across many friends, including a pretty mouse named Rose. Greatly written, an excellent introduction to Redwall.

Mossflower

Pages: 431
Rating: ******½

Mossflower is about when Martin enters Mossflower woods and his adventures there. I think this is a very important book, because it is in this tale that Redwall abbey is actually built. Another masterpiece, Martin joins the woodlanders and the CORIM (Council Of Resistance In Mossflower) to once again bring peace to Mossflower country from the hands of the evil wildcat Tsarmina, Queen of the Thousand Eyes, who murdered her father and imprisoned her brother to have the throne and enslave Mossflower. A must-read... but anyway, so are all of the Redwall books!

Outcast of Redwall

Pages: 360
Rating: *******½

I am reading this book now. So far, Swartt Sixclaw, an evil ferret with a paw with six claws, is on a rampage to gain control over the land he is discovering. Sunflash the Mace, a huge badger with a golden stripe down his head along with his hawk companion Skarlath, escape from the imprisonment of Swartt and travel to find a safe place to build strength and finally crush Swartt and his horde. But Swartt has other plans. I haven't finished it yet... I'll finish this up when I do.

Mariel of Redwall

Pages: 387
Rating: ******½

What do you do when your father was seemingly killed, your body is tied to a stake and you are floating at sea in a storm, find yourself on a deserted island afterwards, and all you have are the torn clothes on your back and a piece of knotted rope in your hands? Name yourself Storm Gullwhacker and find the one who did this to you! That's what Mariel the mouse had to do. She finally finds a way to Redwall Abbey and is taken in. There she is joined by friends to destroy the leader of the searats, Gabool the Wild, who has terrorised enough creatures and land to make anybeast scream in rage. A great book, full of mysteries, humor, and lots of puzzles.

The Bellmaker

Pages: 336
Rating: *******½

The Urgan Nagru is terrorizing the Mossflower land with his gang of vermin, and Redwall, once again, is sick of it. The characters from Mariel of Redwall are back and go to stop the fiends. And like always, they come along friends and comrades for their final battle with the evil horde. Well written, full of songs, riddles, jokes, and, as always, adventure. Another great yarn!

Salamandastron

Pages: 391
Rating: *******½

Another great tale, this time taking place mainly at Salamandastron mountain, where the badger king Urthstripe the Strong and his army of hares live. Like always, some creature decides to make trouble, and that job fits right in for Ferahgo the Assassin, a sly weasel, bent on conquering Salamandastron to find its rumored rooms of treasure. He and his horde lay siege to the mountain, and once again, Redwall creatures jump in. Would you ever think a brat from Redwall could become a hero? This book proves that point. One of the best Redwall books I think... spun very creatively and with much expertise.

Redwall

Pages: 416
Rating: ******½

The book solely about Redwall Abbey and a battle that went on right near it. Cluny the Scourge, a rat known to Redwallers only as a fantasy nightmare, has come and wants to take over Redwall. But, like always, Redwall resists, and a long war goes on... lasting most of the book. Matthias, the young, clumsy mouse, becomes a warrior with the help of Constance the Badger, Methusaleh the old recordkeeper, and the spirit of Martin the Warrior in conjunction with his bravery, sword, and shield. Another great book, the first one spun by Brian Jacques. What a way to make an entrance!

Mattimeo

Pages: 446
Rating: ******

Slagar the Cruel, a horrid fox, and his horde of vermin have stolen the little ones from Redwall, including Matthias's son, Mattimeo. Enraged, Matthias and his friends set out to bring them back to Redwall and get revenge on Slagar. The fox intends to sell the little ones slaves to a place to the south, but the Redwallers come just in time and have a war, eventually saving the little ones. But will they get back to Redwall alive? An excellent tale, it lives up to its title of the 'Triumphant Sequel to Redwall'!

The Pearls of Lutra

Pages: 406
Rating: ******½

The 'Tears of All Oceans', a group of six rose-colored pearls, are being sought by Ublaz, a fox with hypnotizing eyes, living on a small island in the middle of the ocean with his hordes of rats, ferrets, weasels, foxes, and stoats. The pearls, though, are hidden in Redwall Abbey itself. Tansy, a young hedgehog maid, devotes her time to find the pearls, not just for their mysterious beauty, but as ransom for Ublaz, who has kidnapped Redwall's Father Abbot and a volemaid. At the same time, Grath, a strong, female otter, goes to seek revenge on Ublaz for killing her family at Holt Lutra, and is joined on the way by Martin (son of Mattimeo, who is the son of Mattias, who is the chosen one of Martin the Warrior), Clecky, a hare, and his companion, Gerul the Owl, and a bunch of shrews. Another awesome tale with a gigantic climax and a large twist of irony at the end, this book is definitely a great Redwall story!

The Long Patrol

Pages: 358
Rating: *******½

Brian's newest tale, which just came out in America not too long ago. I haven't gotten my hands on it yet, but once I do, I'll put it up here.

Download Patrol.zip, which is a zipped .wav file of Brian Jacques introducing the Long Patrol.

I have a Redwall-like story I'm writing (I didn't want to make it too much like Redwall or else that would be copyright infringement or something), called Javelin. It's about an otter who is shipwrecked on an island swarming with vermin, headed by a huge weasel named Garrath the Fierce. Then, after escaping from Garrath's dungeons, Javelin finds a group of Forest Dwellers (in Redwall they'd be known as 'Woodlanders') who are setting up a secret rebellion against Garrath and his horde. Little does Javelin know, though, he is a prophesized otter that will destroy all evil. You can read my story, chapter by chapter (come chapters are huge, so I'd have to split them into parts), on my Javelin link in the Main Menu, or you can click here.
