The third planet of the Hoth system is an icy barren world. During the day, it gets warm enough on hoth that it's inhabitants (non-human) can walk the icy surface. But at night time, no living creature can survive without shelter. One of the creatures of the planet Hoth is the Wompa. It is a carnivorous creature that lives in caves and hunts during the day for food. It's usual prey is the taun-taun, a creature that the Rebel Alliance made use of during their stay on hoth. The creatures' high speed and resistance to the cold made it ideal transportation for the rebels before they were able to get their snowspeeders working.
Unfortunately for the rebelion, they were forced to leave the planet when the empire attacked shortly after the destruction of Death Star I. They were forced to leave behind much of their valuble equipment, such as their ion cannon and many of ther ground based laser turrets.
