Kate Mulgrew, Star Trek Voyager's
Captain Janeway, was born on April 29, 1955 and grew up in Dubuque, Iowa. She is the second oldest of 8 children.
Her mother was a housewife and is a good painter, and her father owned a road construction company. Both are now
retired.
Kate left Iowa at 17 to study
acting in New York and attended the Stella Adler Conservatory at New York University. Kate's fascinating voice
no doubt helped her immediately land a roll in ABC's Ryan's Hope, while simultaneously earning the role of Emily
in a production of "Our Town" at the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, CT. At the age of 23
she got tha role as Mrs Columbo in Kate Love A Mystery. She has costarred with James Garner in Man of the People.
She has also appeared in Cheers and Murphy Brown. Her movies include: Love Spell, A Stranger is Watching, Throw
Momma From the Train, and Remo Williams. Her stage credits include: Hedda Gabbler, Black Comedy, and Titus Andromius.
Kate Mulgrew's big break
came when Genevieve Bujold gave up the demanding job of Captain of the USS Voyager after only one day of filming.
Mulgrew immediatly won over Star Trek producers Berman, Piller and Taylor. For six seasons now, she has proven
that Captain Kathryn Janeway can fulfill her duty as a woman commanding a Star Ship and make us forget the former
Captain Kirk as well as all other Captains.
Incidentally, the honorary
title of "Doctor of Letters for Artistic Contribution" was bestowed upon her by Seton Hall University.
Kate Mulgrew has also received two awards for best actress: The Saturn award and The Golden Satellite's special
achievment award in 1998.
Kate Mulgrew lives in Hollywood and has two teenage
sons, Alec and Ian. She also has a grownup daughter. She is NOT Katherine Hepburn's niece, for everyone who heard
that rumor.
Kate Mulgrew married 'Ohio
commissioner Tim Hagan 1999.
