Captain's Log

Season 5
Video 5.12

Episode 117

Captain Janeway reminisces about her ancestor Shannon O'Donnel, the first of her family's long line of explorers and one who helped build the Millennium Gate on Earth. As Janeway relates the story, the episode revisits the town of Portage Creek on New Year's Eve 1999, as Shannon O'Donnel (played by Kate Mulgrew) nears the deadline to convince the town's last holdout, local bookstore owner Henry Janeway, to approve the building of massive, half a mile high Milliennium Gate, a model for the first colony on Mars.

I liked this episode, alot. Kate Mulgrew does a splendid performance portraying Shannon O'Donnel. But noone can accuse 11:59 for being exciting. It's a slowpaced show and ends even more slowpaced. But to me that is just the point. It's a story of life and how the perceptions of it alters over time. Life does not always, or more correctly, does not, most of the time, turn out the way we expect. But still, we should not fail to see the small tings in life which are just as, or maybe even more, important. I think this might be an episode you wont appreciate unless you are a bit older and have some perspective on things. The end scene with the senior staff taking a "family" picture in the messhall is a nice touch. However it's not a perfect episode. The writers seem to have forgotten that is was Janeway's father that inpsired her to be a starfleet officer and their is no chemistry between Shannon and Henry Janeway.

In an episode that revisits Janeway's first day aboard the U.S.S. Voyager and then fast forwards 500 years beyond it when her ship is destroyed, Captain Braxton of the 29th century Federation Timeship Relativity contacts Seven of Nine to go back in time to solve the mystery of who planted the "temporal disrupter" which ultimately destroyed the U.S.S. Voyager. But when the new starship captain, Janeway, catches the mysterious Seven aboard the brand new U.S.S. Voyager, she detains her, an interference that could contaminate the time-line.

This a fast paced, confusing, do not think, gives you a headache, episode. Don't think deep, just take the ride and have fun.
"The Janeway factor". That was sooooo funny!!! Rating 9/10
