Now We Are Six
Dana sighed and pulled the paper off the desk calendar. She opened a
book. No such luck. She rose from her chair and clumsily walked over to the
door. "Mommy, I'm going out side to play!" she shouted to the upstairs room
her mother was occupying. "Check in every half hour!" her mother shouted
back. She turned to the door and turned the handle. She stepped down and
took a deep breath. Fresh, clean, crisp air. She turned to her right. A
moving van!
Fox Mulder slumped down into the bench that was parked to the left of
his new house. How awful, to move. Fox already missed his friends and his
school and his old house. He stared at thr ground with his head in his hands.
Usually in his bouncy six-year-old nature, Fox was deeply saddened by having
to move away from his very best friend, Chris. But little did he know his
very best friend he would ever make lived right next door.
Then, a little bouncy red-haired freckled girl sat down next to him.
"Hello," Dana said, smiling. "I'm Dana." Fox looked up and a shadow of a
smile fell across his face. "I'm Fox," he said. "I like that name," Dana
said nicely. Fox finally smiled at this friendly little bouncy curly haired
girl. She had a nice nature about her. "Would you like to be my friend?"
Dana asked politely. Fox sat up. "Sure," he said happily. "Well would you
like to come to my house? I could show you my room and you can meet my mom,"
Dana offered to her new friend. "And I have a tree house in my back yard!"
she added excitedly. "Okay, let me ask my mom," Fox said, jumping up. He ran
into his house. "MOM!" he shouted. Dana smiled and stood up, eager to be a
good friend.
"She said okay!" Fox shouted, running towards her. "Okay," Dana said.
"C'mon." They both walked towards Dana's house. Dana opened the door.
"Mommy!" she shouted. She ran up the stairs and Fox followed her. "Mommy, I
made a new friend today. His name is Fox." Dana's mother smiled her angel
smile. "Well, Fox, are you new to the nieghborhood?" Fox nodded. "Okay,
well you too have a good time!" Dana's mother smiled. Dana looked at Fox and
jerked her head to the door. "Let's go."
Dana walked down to her room. "Wow, you have a TV?" asked Fox, utterly
amazed. "Yeah," Dana shrugged, as though it were no big deal. "I want to
show you my tree house!" said Dana excitedly and she ran out of the room, with
Fox soon on her heels. With that same mother radar mothers seem to have,
Dana's mother sang out, "Dana, no running in the house!" Dana stopped
immediately. She slowly walked to the sliding glass door, and opened it.
Then she started to run to wards her tree house.
"Come on!" she shouted, gesturing towards the rope she had already
partially climbed. Fox climbed in after her. He sat down on one of the many
brightly colored pillows that covered the ground. The walls of the wooden
domain were wallpapered with vibrantly colored six-year-old drawings. "Come
over here," Dana said. She pulled out some metal saftey-scissors. She picked
up a purple pillow and gestured toward it. Her intials were carved into the
wood. There the letters read, 'D.K.S.' "Here," she said, handing hm the
scissors. "Put your name on it." He looked at her with a 'are you sure?'
look, and Dana shot him a 'duh, go ahead!' look back. He bent over and
uneasily etched his name in the hard wood. Then there were two sets.
'D.K.S.' and 'F.W.M.,' they read.

Fox Mulder looked sick on the first day of first grade. So did Dana.
Side by side, they looked uneasily at the, new, big school. "Okay! Turn
around and let me get a picture of you in your pretty clothes!" Dana's mother
squealed, and Dana made a face before she turned around. Her dress was a
blue-green to match her eyes, and to top it off she had a bow in her hair to
match her dress. *Click!* *Click, click!* The camera flashed and Dana
forced a smile. Fox's mother wasn't so fussy. One picture was all she
wanted, then she fixed his hair and sent him off.
Dana and Fox walked side by side down the sidewalk to their new school.
"What class did you get?" Dana asked. "I got Mrs. Fisk. Who'd you get?" "I
got Mrs. Fisk, too!" Dana exclaimed happily. And so began the new year.
Since Dana and Fox lived so close to the school, they only had to walk
home one block. Halfway there, a third grader stopped them in their tracks.
Fox had met him at school today by accidentally knocking the kid's books out
of his hand. "So, kids, how are you today?" the huge third grader replied.
"Move it or lose it," Fox muttered, and tried to get by. The kid grabbed Fox
by his collar. "What's your name?" "Fox," he replied. The fat kid started
to laugh. "That's funny! Fox?! What a name!" Fox frowned. "Leave him
alone," Dana said, with a hint of threat in her voice. "What did you just
say?" "I said, leave him alone." The kid dropped Fox and went after Dana.
"Why you little..." Dana started to run and Fox ran after her. They both ran
into Dana's house.
"Dana, sweetie, no run-" Dana's mother stopped when she heard the slam
of the glass door. They were already outside. They scurried up the ladder
then pulled the ladder up with them. "What a jerk," Dana muttered, catching
her breath. "Yeah," Fox said. "What a jerk."
****
"Come on," Dana called excitedly as she climbed up the ladder. Fox and Dana
were going to spend the night in her tree house. Any other mothers would've
freaked out about a boy and a girl in the same treehouse together, but they
were only six. What could happen?
As they laid looking at the stars, Dana asked, "What do you want to
be when you grow up?" "I want to be a police," Fox said and then took out an
imaginary gun. "Boom, boom. The bad guys'll never get away from me. You?"
Dana hesitated and then thought a minute. "I want to be a doctor." Silence.
"Do you know how to play Stratego?" Fox asked. Dana shook her head. "I
brought the game if you want me to teach you," offered Fox. "Okay!"
"Now, after that move, you can-" " DAAANNNNNAAAAAA!!!!!" a voice
wailed from the ground below, interrupting Fox's instructions. "What?!" Dana
asked angrily, poking her head out of the treetop down to look at her older
sister, Missy. They took the ladder up so that Missy couldn't come up
earlier. "LET ME COME UP!!!!!!!!" Missy shouted. "No!" Dana said, her face
growing red with anger. "MOM SAID I COULD!!!!" she wailed. "NO!" Dana
shouted back, then pulled her head back in the treehouse. Missy huffed and
ran back into the house.
"Sisters are so annoying," Dana breathed, shaking her head. "I know.
I have a dumb baby for a sister. She cries all the time," Fox muttered. He
didn't really hate the baby. He was just feeling degraded like the rotten egg
in the family. They both shook their heads. "Sisters."

It was a Saturday. Dana and Fox were walking near the creek where they
lived. they weren't exactly allowed to go there, but they *forgot* the rules.
The creek was deep and mucky. Fox took a stick and threw it into the river.
Then they both took pebbles and played a game to see who could throw pebbles
the farthest. Then they sat down. "Fox, am I your best friend?" Dana asked,
her seafoam eyes piercing him. "Of course," Fox said. "Good," Dana smiled.
"Let's make a pact," Fox said, " a vow to be best friends forever." His eyes
sparkled. "Okay!" Fox put his hand down. Dana put her's. "Best friends
forever?" Dana asked. "Best friends forever." Fox said.
"DAAAAANNNNNNNAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!" "My mom's calling me. I gotta
go!" Dana said. "Okay," Fox said. "Bye." Dana leaned down and gave him a
kiss on the cheek. "See you later."
