Milky Way

We are living in a galaxy called Milky Way.

On a dark night when the sky is clear, a faint white band can be seen stretching across the sky from horizon. That is why we called it as Milky Way.

Solar System is located far from the centre of Milky Way, closer to the edge of Galaxy's disk. But we can only see the nearby stars as the clouds have absorbed the light.

What shape is it? The astronomers thought that it is similar to Andromeda galaxy which is a spiral galaxy.

From the young-star area at the edge to the old-star area in the centre, you have to take one hundred thousand years to go through it if you could travel as fast as light!*,*

at 2 billion years.
