The first member of the Fantastic Four to encounter Alpha Flight was Benjamin Grimm, a.k.a. the Thing. He sought out Walter Langkowski (Alpha Sasquatch) to help him in healing a friend who was dying of radiation. At first, Sasquatch believed Thing to be a threat because fellow Alphan, Shaman, had predicted a danger to the team. After a short fight, both people realized that the danger was actually Ranark, the Ravager. Thing helped Alpha Flight defeat the Ravager, but Langkowski was unable to aid Grimm's ailing friend. Alpha Flight next encountered the Fantastic Four member Sue Richards (the Invisible Girl) when she and Namor were investigating mysterious actions by Atlanteans. Their trip lead them to the Canadian arctic where they assisted Alpha Flight in fighting the Master of the World.

Shortly after that meeting, Walter Langkowski attended the failed birth of Sue Richards' daughter. Alpha Flight and the Fantastic Four had limited contact after that. They worked together once again when Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) detected unusual energy readings in the Canadian north. The two teams worked together to investigate only to discover Headlok who subverted some of them into becoming the Headbangers. The two teams were able to eventually overcome him, working together.

The Fantastic Four were also the inspiration for James Hudson to transform Department H from a research and development branch of the Ministry of Defence into a super-human development and training organization.
