Gambit's natural abilities and his mutant power, the capacity to change the potenial energy in an object into kenitic energy and throw it like a projectile, where it usually explodes. His objects of choice are playing cards.
Remy was an orphan, and was stolen by the Theives' Guild, whose leader took an interest in the infant. Jean-Luc LeBeau adopted Remy and taught him how to steal in street gangs, training him to be a master theif for the Guild. He was later initiated into the Thieves Guild of New Orleans, who were forever at odds with the Assassins Guild. He married Belladonna, daughter of the Assassins Guild leader, in an attempt to maintain peace, but her brother Julian objected to the theif marrying his sister and challenged him to a duel. Remy wounded Julian and was forced to leave New Orleans to prevent a Guild war. He made his living for a while relying on his prowess as a master theif.
While a theif, Sinister (and an unrevieled character) recruited him to organize a team of mutants called the Marauders. They were then led into the Morlock tunnels where the Marauders slaughtered the Morlocks. Gambit did not know of Sinister's plans to do this, and it has been his deepest shame and darkest secret ever since.
He met Storm during a robbery a little while after that. They were while trying to rob the same house , and both got pursued by the Jacob-Reisz incarnation of the Shadow King and his human hounds. They escaped and continued together for a spell. Later, Storm sponsored him for membership in the X-Men, and Gambit jumped at the chance to atone for his earlier sins. But, as we all know, all secrets are revealed in the X-Men, and Gambit left again in shame when his connection to Sinister was revealed. Remy then returned to thevery, but steals from criminals and mostly for the thrill rather than the need.
Gambit flirted with Jean Gray for a short while, but he is really fond of Rogue. She cannot be touched but he keeps acting as if he were immune to her powers.
When Sabretooth was trapped in the mansion, he revealed why both of them hate each other so much. When Remy was very young, he went to Paris to steal a jewel which was first stolen from a rich man by a girl named Genieve. Sabretooth was the man who was paid to recover it for his owner, but decided to play with the boy, so he let him steal Genieve's heart and then the jewel. Then he kidnapped both the girl and Henri, Gambit's brother. Sabretooth then hanged Genieve and Henri from Notre Dame, asking Gambit to decide which one he would save. Gambit chose Henri, and Genieve died. Sabretooth then stole the jewel back from Gambit.
Gambit has been in a relationship with Candra, from the Externals. After being with the X-Men a while, Belladonna, Remy's wife, begged for help from her husband. There was a war between the guilds, and her deceased brother, Julian, was the one to lead it. The children of the guilds had disappeared as well. The group moved to New Orleans to find that the Brood had done it again. But with the help of the Ghost Rider, they rescued the kids and re-destroyed the aliens. Belladonna wasn't as lucky and fell into a coma, believed to be dead by Remy.
Candra had a deal with the Thieves, and she would give out parts of a potion of immortality from time to time. Julian wanted it to repair his wrecked body and was harassing the guild for it, so Henri came again to his brother. When Gambit knew that Belladonna was still alive, decided to get the last bit of the magic potion for her. Rogue went with him and took care of the woman, but unwillingly touched her and absorbed her mind. When he made his wife drink the potion, she came back to a new life with an empty mind, not even recognizing her husband.
Over 70 years into the future, Bishop was trained by Gambit, known by that time as the Witness. He was said by all to be the last surviving member of the X-Men, which caused Bishop to believe that he was the traitor that killed them off. It wasn't until after Bishop came to the 616 reality that he learned that it was Onslaught, an entity spawned from Xavier's own mind, that had actually betrayed the X-men.
Remy Lebeau, the man known as Gambit, was once an X-Man. He quickly fell in love with Rogue but for a time was unable to express his feelings. Later, when Magneto perfected a way for him to be able to touch Rogue, Gambit fell into a fit of jealousy. Gambit realized that Rogue loved Magneto as much as he did her, and left the X-Men as a result of this. Years later, when Magneto stumbled across Bishop in Seattle and learned the truth about his world, he asks Gambit to take the X-Ternals and traverse the galaxy in search of the M'Kraan Crystal in order to remake the world as it should have been. Gambit succeeds in his mission, but at great personal cost as he sacrifices his love for Rogue in exchange for a shard of the crystal.
