Alex Summers was orphaned as a child when the plane piloted by his father exploded in the skies over Alaska, taking with it his parents and brother, Scott, Cyclops in the 616 reality. Since his grandmother couldn't take him, Alex was placed in an orphanage run by the state. Years later, Summers was placed in the care of Professor Xavier, and became one of the founding members of the X-Men.
When Professor Xavier became too ill to lead his team, Magneto took over the running of the X-Men. Being a former member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Magneto caused great dissension within the X-Men. Several members left the group, forming a separate team whose mission was to uphold the ideals taught by Xavier. This team, was led by Havok and was called X-Factor. During this time, Alex fell in love with Madelyne Pryor, and their marriage produced one child, Scott Charles Summers.
It is Havok who is largely credited with forging a peaceful relationship between humans and mutants, and not Magneto. Havok uses his body to absorb ambient cosmic energy and releases it in waves of energy which heat the air in their path enough to turn it into plasma.
