Mesmero, a dangerous American criminal escaped from federal correctional facility in Yakima, Washington, slaying several guards in the process. Once free, he fled to Vancouver, where he was tracked down by the Mark VI Sentinels. In an effort to save his life, he took human hostages to hold the Sentinels at bay. Alpha Flight arrived and was able to both destroy the Sentinels as well as to capture Mesmero.

Mesmero was a mutant with powerful hypnotic abilites. He could control a large crowd of people at once and could force individuals to against their nature. However, his hypnotic stare only mesmerizes someone after direct eye-to-eye contact.
