Rachel comes from the saga 'Days of a future past', where she makes an older Kate exchange her mind with her younger version (Kitty Pryde) in their past. In that future, the sentinels rule the Earth and most mutants have been murdered or jailed. Ray herself had been part of the mutant hunters, a group of slaves with psychic powers used to track down other mutants. When their future was prevented (sort of) she was unwillingly sent to the past by Kate in the middle of their final attack against Nimrod, after seeing all her friends deaths, as well as her boyfriend's, Franklin Richards.

She got to the Xavier's Mansion, finding there Illyana at the age she was supposed to be in the future (you bet! In Ray's temporal line, Illyana was never kidnapped by Belasco). Then she escaped, supposing she wasn't in the past, falling into Selene's arms. After being rescued by the X-Men, she joined them, revealing her origin only to Charles Xavier. Unfortunately, she found out that in this temporal line, her mother was dead and her father had married Madelyne Pryor, even worse, she was pregnant and gave birth to a boy. Since Ray was an only child, this guaranteed her no-existence.

Although Jean was not dead, she couldn't assimilate having clones, dark incarnations, lost sisters, a married boyfriend and a teenage daughter all at once, so she rejected the girl, who was slowly loosing sanity, until deciding to kill Selene and falling onto Wolvie's claws. Then, she was fooled by Spiral, going to Mojo's World where her body was restored but she was a prisoner. She managed to escape later with help from Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Meggan and Captain Britain, teaming with them in a new group, Excalibur, and living for a while in Britain. Some time later, Captain Britain got lost in time and space, being Ray his only chance of returning and after being at her parents marriage, she gleefully accepted interchanging with him, being then carried to Cable's future, where she founded the Clan Askani to help her brother and try to defeat Apocalypse, master of the world at that time. She had the chance of meeting again her parents, for she brought their essences during their honeymoon to the future to have someone to protect and raise baby Nate, but she was extremely old and died.

Anyway, the possibility of Ray appearing again is open, since a phoenix always rises from its ashes ...
