Sunset Grace was a very powerful mutant, with the ability to open dimensional doorways into the astral plane. She was on the beach when Rachel (Summers, a.k.a. Phoenix) transported, or ripped, the souls of Scott and Jean (Cyclops and Jean Grey) to the Askani future timeline to raise Scott and Madelyne's son, Nathan Christopher (Cable) in the guise of Slym and Redd.

Hearing them scream opened her own soul to a tragedy that had closed her heart many years ago. Her husband and son had died in a car accident, but she was thrown out of the car and survived them. Grace had tried to save them by opening a dimensional doorway underneath them, but it had been too long since she had used her powers and she was never sure if they had survived or not. After she had done it, she couldn't find her way to the door she had opened and therefore couldn't find out if they had lived or died.

With the help of Professor Xavier, she got her life back together, knowing in her heart that they were dead. But upon seeing the couple on the beach who were just beginning their life in such utter torment, the doorway was ripped open, destroying everything in its path as it spilled out into reality. With the help of Jean Grey's more stable mind, she "found" her husband and son inside the astral plane and decided to close herself up inside it, setting the world back to rights as she did so.
