Rahne is an orphan who was raised by priest named Craig, this causing her to be quite shy and self-repressed. When her mutant power, turning into a wolf, appeared, the priest, as well as herself, thought that it was due to demon-posession, and tried to exorcise her. Fortunately, she found her way to Moira McTaggert, who adopted and protected her. She went to Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters to learn to control her ability, and joined the New Mutants as a founding member.

During the time she spent there, she had a relationship with Cypher, who died trying to save her from a shooter. Some time later, the Genoshans captured the team, and Rahne was turned into a Mutate, genetically programmed to obey Alex Summers (at that time he was a magistrate). That's why after recovering freedom by turning into her wolf form, she joined X-Factor (with Alex as chief) rather than X-Force (the team that was born from the New Mutants, which she had been a part of).

She fancied herself in love with Alex, since she knew of no other reason why she would want to follow him so blindly. Since she couldn't revert to the human form, stayed in a werewolf state, turning more beastly until Haven healed her.
