I wonder
what it is about the "Caste of Assassins"
that seems to attract so many followers. I would
think that most of them think it's really "dark
and mysterious" to be an Assassin. Perhaps they
have this deep rooted need to be "feared".
Maybe it's a fashion statement to walk into a channel
with the "black dagger" painted on their
IRC foreheads. I would doubt that they are Assassins
in real life, so that can't be the reason. Whatever
the reason, why they choose to play Assassins is not
the topic of this editorial. The fact that they now
seek to standardize IRC Gor is. There is an
"Assassins Guild" now, making it's presence
known, much like the remnants of last Thanksgiving's
potato salad as it falls from the shelf in the back
of the refrigerator. I am not quite sure what to
think about this. I visited the "Assassins
Guild" website, and was greeted with something
about bringing "order and uniformity" to
Gor. Now I have to wonder who in their right
mind would even ask the Assassin's Caste to do this
for them. I wouldn't. After all, the Caste of
Assassins is just a roleplay thing. Why should
Goreans wish to have their world ruled and ordered by
a fictional group of people? Perhaps someone out
there knows the answer. As I pondered this
situation, an idea began to dawn...
Why
not a "Warriors Guild"? How about a
"Peasants Guild"? Or a "Scribes
Guild"? Perhaps a "Physicians Guild"?
We could have any number of "Guilds" to run
IRC Gor, could we not? Many of which would probably
be a bit more realistic, and better fit to the task
than the caste of killers. Somehow I find it a bit
unnerving to think of people actually looking to this
"Assassins Guild" for guidance and
teaching. I continue to think, and the answer begins
to come forth, like a dead horse, returned from the
grave for a much needed beating...
Considering
that Assassins are roleplay figures, (my apologies to
any real-life Assassins here) the only thing the
"Assassins Guild" could be interested in
doing, would be to bring "order and
uniformity" to their own killing games. What
else could they wish to order and unify? With this
clarified in my own mind, I find myself thinking
perhaps the "Guild" is a good thing for
these people, just so they realize their idea of
"order and uniformity" will in no way
effect the lives of those here who have no interest
in playing the game. If you are even bordering on
thinking that IRC Killing is not a game, then perhaps
you will do us all a favor, and take a long, much
needed siesta from IRC. If you find these words
offensive, then bring your Assassin self to my
doorstep, knock on the door, sword drawn, and say
"I have come for you". I promise you I will
not use a popup or a macro to respond. *smile*
On
a final note, I have a suggestion for the
"Guild": Circulate through IRC Gor, ask
everyone the simple question "If you are killed,
will you die?". Compile a list of those who
answer "yes", and then continue playing.
This way you do not have to waste your time and
effort "hunting" that which cannot be
killed. I know of at least one "Assassin"
that seems to have it in for a certain slave. I
wonder if it bothers him that this slave will not
"die" if he "kills" her? Seems a
waste of time to me, but I suppose I am one who
values my time, and choose to spend it on more
realistic pursuits.
