The first novel concerning the Ankh-Morpork Watch, Guards! Guards! starts with the arrival of a certain young Carrot in Ankh-Morpork (Citie of One Thousand Surprises!). The naive Carrot, who was brought up by dwarfs despite being over six feet tall, learns to deal with the many things Ankh-Morpork throws at him (a shield helps) and, better still, how to polish his breastplate (or as he might say, 'chestplate') until it's really shiny. But there is a twist (isn't there always one?) - a huge dragon, summoned by members of a secret brotherhood to be their king, is terrorising the city. Now the Watch have a greater enemy to deal with... the populace. |
