Kurt Wagner was shunned by birth due to his having blue skin, pointed ears, fangs, and a long pointed tail. Abandoned by his mother (whom until recently he did not know was Mystique), he was adopted into a family of gypsies and became a circus performer. He was approached by Charles Xavier to join the X-Men after the
disappearance of the original team. After many adventures, Kurt was severely wounded during the Mutant Massacre by the Marauder called Riptide. He was taken to Muir Island where he recuperated, but discovered that he could no longer teleport as he
originally could, and that teleporting others caused a great strain. After hearing of the "death" of the X-Men during the Fall Of The Mutants, he, along with Shadowcat, Captain Britain, and Meggan became the founding members of Excalibur. He became
team leader after Captain Britain's disappearance into the time-stream, and has remained leader even after Captain Britain's return.
