Dr. Robert Bruce Banner was...is...was a brilliant nuclear scientist who
developed weapons for the military. During the testing of his latest weapon, the gamma bomb, Dr. Banner ran out
onto the testing range to rescue a teenager named Rick Jones who had driven onto the field. For reasons involving
sabotage, the gamma bomb was detonated while Banner was still on the field...And the rays of the gamma bomb
affected Banner and changed him into the Hulk.
Over the years the Hulk has gone through many transformations. Some good and some bad. Many people think
that Banner only turns into the Hulk in times of stress or pain. But the truth is after the gamma bomb explosion the
Hulk's skin was grey, but soon turned to a more familiar green. During this time Banner only turned into the Hulk
at sundown and back to his normal self at sunrise. The Hulk himself was portrayed as a confused, shambling
creature with an intense hatred for mankind. Not even his companion Rick Jones could control him. Soon the Hulk
gets exposed to even more gamma radiation after being banished from Earth in a rocket. When he returns to Earth
he can remain the Hulk during the day and has a telepathic link to Rick Jones, obeying his every word. However,
the Hulk soon gained the intelligence and personality of Banner.
By the time Incredible Hulk #6 rolled around, Banner could transform back and forth at will by using a gamma ray
projector. The Hulk had taken on a nastier, more agressive attitude, and his dialogue sounded more like the
Thing's. His hatred for Banner was in full force at this time, but he was shrewd enough to realize when he had to
change back into that puny, pink skinned, weakling, Banner. On one of his transformations his whole body changed
into the Hulk's except for his head.
Later, when the Hulk returns to Earth after an adventure in outer space, riding a gamma irridated-teleportation
beam that ultimately causes a startling change in the Hulk's condition. Banner was now in complete control of the
Hulk and would be able to transform just by thinking about it. Every now and
then, the Banner persona was lost in those critical times the Hulk became so
outraged.
Doc Samson later created the nutrient bath and physically seperated Banner
from the Hulk, to give Banner the chance to live the rest of his life without the
Hulk. But the Hulk is to important to Banners psyche for them to live
seperated. So they both slowly begin to die, untill the android avenger known as
Vision reintegrates Banner and the Hulk. But this takes a turn for the worse.
While Banner is the Hulk, the Banner body actually begins to come out of the
Hulk's body and speaks. The Hulk then falls into the nutrient bath and emerges
as the grey Hulk ounce more. Meaning he transforms into the Hulk at night and
then returns to Banner at sunrise.
Once again there is a nuclear explosion, but this time the Hulk is bombarded by the rays at ground zero and miracuously survives and later turns up as Mr. Joe Fixit, a peacekeeper, bouncer, and
leg-breaker at a Las Vegas casino. He could now exist in the day time although the sun caused him pain. But, the
Banner persona soon becomes present again.
The most incredible change Banner went through was when all three of the personalities were combined. It turned
out Banner was an MPD...suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder. He had it long before the gamma bomb
went off. It didn't create the Hulk, just gave shape to what already existed within him. MPD was brought on by
being abused by his father at a young age. Through hypnosis they found the three personalities. They were the
green rampaging one...a grey version that wasn't as strong, but far more crafty and intelligent...and the core
personality, or "normal" scientist. All three were combined so now Banner has the strength of the green Hulk, the
craftiness of the grey, and the intelligence and personality of a nuclear scientist.
