After it's refit in the year 2270, the original Enterprise became the new shining beacon of the Federation. The Enterprise was destroyed in the year 2285 when Capt. Kirk ordered a self destruct sequence while on a quest to the Genesis Planet to try and ressque Spock.
Later, after an official hearing regarding the incidents resulting in the destruction of the original Enterprise, Capt. Kirk and his crew are given the Enterprise-A , converted from the U.S.S. Yorktown in the year 2286. This ship later penetrated the Great Barrier in 2287 (Star Trek V ), and before being de-comishined in 2293, was involved in uncovering an assassination attempt on the Chanalor of the Klingon High Concil.
