The X-wing is considered one of the best fighters in the galaxy. With it's quad lasers, dual torp tubes, and high speed and agility, it is indeed a space superiority fighter. One of the most common ships in the New Republic, it is used for many types of missions. From recon, to destroying Imp capital ships, to destroying wave after wave of TIEs, it is ideally suited for almost any task. Renegade Squad uses this particular fighter extensively.
The B-wing is a heavy assault starfighter, and it does just what the name implies. With a total of 3 laser cannons, 3 ion cannons, and 12 torpeoes, a small group of B-wings caan take out a Star Destroyer, with only 2 or 3 A-wings as escort. A lone B-wing can in itself take out a Nebulon-B Frigate. This ship is not as agile or fast as the X-wing, but the extra firepower and superior shields and hull strength more than make up for it. The squad also uses this ship extensively, and it is my personal favorite.
The Y-wing is considered one of the most versitile starfighters in the galaxy. Though it is sluggish, and has extremely low menuverability, it has relatively good shields and hull strength, and in my opinion, has the best weapons configuration of any starfighter. This little packge is loaded up with dual laser cannons, dual ion cannons, and dual torp tubes, carrying 4 torps each. Despite the Y-wing's shortcomings, it is all around a good and reliable fighter. This ship is used in operations to capture a ship, especially when the B-wing is not availiable.
The A-wing is the fastest fighter in the New Republic's arsenal... and the weakest. This little ship has nearly the speed and manuverabilty of TIE, but inherited some of it's drawbacks too. This little ship has dual laser cannons, and dual missile launchers... and not much in the way of shields or hull. On the other hand, this cockpit-strapped-to-a-frigate's-engine of a ship has superior interception capabilities. While it's missiles don't pack quite as much of a punch as a torp, they are used more often to shoot down TIE Bombers, and other fighters because it has more agility and speed than a torp. The A-wing, is used in almost all missions to fly cover, and every so often, are used to fly recon missions.
The Shuttle is used by both sides of the confict. Used by the Empire for transport and the Imps also use itagainst starfighters because it has shields. (Though doesn't stand a chance against a pilot worth anything, flying any starfighter.) Renegade Squad uses this for nothing other than transport and to bring in the Special Forces once a ship has been disabled. (The basic transport is also used for this purpose, but I couldn't find a picture. Sorry.)
