NEVE'S RETURN ?
Will Neve Campbell Return for
Scream 3?
That
is the burning question regarding the progress and production of Scream
3. After Scream
was filmed, it was basically assumed and confirmed that Neve
would return for Scream 2.
After she finished filming Scream 2
in the summer of 1997, Neve began expressing doubt whether she
would return she would return for the final film. Well Neve's
character, Sidney, did indeed survive Scream
2, so will she be back for Scream
3? Or
will her fear of being typecasted as a "Scream-Queen"
force her to pull a Jamie Lee Curtis and bow out of Scream
3? We track the ongoing process of Neve
Campbell's decision.
April 1999: E! Online confirms that
Neve will indeed reprise her role of Sidney one last time for
"Scream 3." May I speak for everyone when I say,
"Whew!" Looks like the end of this section! :(
March 10, 1999: At the annual
Showest Convention in Las Vegas, Miramax Pictures presents their
annual 1999 film line-up. Among the "official" logo for
"Scream 3", Miramax reported the film's stars are Neve
Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette.
March 1, 1999: Variety
reports that Dimension Films has
greenlighted "Scream 3." It reports the return of key
crew members Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven while returning
stars like David Arquette, Courteney Cox, and Neve Campbell are
"certain" to reprise their roles.
February 1999: Neve Campbell
announces her post-"Party of Five" season hiatus plans.
She has signed on as the star in film entitled Me
. Don't panic! Remember, Neve managed to
film Wild Things and Scream
2 during the summer of 1997, so there's
still hope.
November 1998: Wes Craven
confirms that Neve is STILL undecided and will make a decision
based on the script she receives from Kevin Williamson after he
begins writing it in January.
October 1998:
Movie websites are now reporting that Neve Campbell has signed on
for Scream 3, in part of
a deal with Miramax to produce and star in an independent project
with her brother, Christian.
October 1998: Reports are now
stating that if Neve has any kind of role in Scream
3 that it will be small and might perhaps,
be the infamous opening scene role. (You all know what that
means!) This will definitely not obligate Neve to Scream
4, 5,
6.
July 1998: Neve's
publicist, Wes Craven, and Kevin Williamson say that Neve is
sitll undecided, despite the Ireland TV & Film Net interview.
Wes Craven states that there is plenty of time for Neve to change
her mind, since Scream 3 doesn't
begin production until late spring 1999.
June 16, 1998: In an exclusive
interview with Ireland Film & TV Net, they ask her about Scream
3. Here is her repsonse: "I think
because of the success of the Scream
movies, and the fact that the only other hit movie I've been
involved with is The Craft,
people think I'm some sort of scream queen, if you'll excuse the
pun," says Campbell. "But that's something I really
want to avoid. In each case with these films, the scripts were
just too good to pass up." Suprisingly, Campbell says she
won't be returning for Scream 3.
"I'm sure Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two scripts,
will make a great job of it, but it's just that fear I have of
being typecast," confesses Campbell. "I've really
enjoyed these first two movies, and I'm very proud of them, but I
think I could easily become 'that girl from the Scream
movies' if I stuck around for the third installment." But
Campbell hopes that the fans will not take it personally.
"I'm not doing Scream 3
because I don't want to end up being typecast, that's all. It's a
career decision, not a personal one."
May 1998: Neve wins an
award for Best Actress for Scream 2
at the MTV Movie Awards and is asked about Scream
3. She says she is talking to Bob and Harvey
Weinstein at Miramax about it and still has to make a decision.
April 1998: Supposedly, Kevin
Williamson stated in an interview that Neve is signed on for Scream
3.
March 1998: Neve is asked
about reprising her role in Scream 3
in Fangoria magazine. She is quoted by responding, "I
haven't decided whether or not I'll do it. I'm a little scared of
that. I don't want to think that the Scream
movies are all I can do. That's why I've been trying to do other
films as well. We'll see. It depends on whether I fond something
else I really want to do during my hiatus of Party
of Five. It depends on the script. If I had
a choice between doing Scream 3 or
some other role I love. I'd do the other role."
