A Father's Visit

My mother had been ill for some time and my brother called me home because he felt she was losing ground quickly. I could tell the moment I saw her that my brother was right.

As soon as I arrived she seemed to begin letting go. One evening my brother came back to his house after a visit with my mother and said he thought I should go back and see her again right away. I went to her immediately and could tell by her breathing that little time was left.

As I stood by her bed, I had the strange feeling that my father was near. I looked at the picture she had of him beside her bed and I could have sworn there was life in his eyes. They seemed to twinkle at me.

I started to call my brother and then thought better of it, 'he should stay with his children'. So I waited until my mother passed away. I called my brother, told him she was gone and that I would come to his house as soon as I could. When I arrived at my brother's he was waiting for me.

What he told me next astounded me. He said that while he had been with my mother, he had had the sense that Daddy was there. He said he looked at the photograph and thought that our father smiled at him. He said he also felt that he was to get me to go there. He said it was if Daddy was there giving instructions.

I had not said a word to my brother about the picture or what I had felt. But we both believe my father was there the night my mother died. We are not people inclined to believe in things we cannot prove. I have no idea how to explain this, other than to say that I believe my father who had been dead for twenty years was there that night.
