WOW! I'm absolutely flabbergasted that something I wished for actually came true - G.I. Joe figures are back on retail shelves, nearly identical to their original forms! When I first started collecting Joes in 1996, it was still possible to find some late-era figures in stores. Seeing these carded figures got me thinking that a reissue of the original 1982-1985 run would be just about the coolest thing ever. The repaints of 1997-98/2000+ were pretty awesome, and the comic packs were definitely great. But what I really wanted were Joes in their vintage packaging, either with original molds or their original designs resculpted, much like the Star Wars vintage series. I only had to wait 11 years (almost three times as long as when I actually played with G.I. Joe toys as a kid), but finally 2007 brought us the 25th Anniversary series! These figures are my absolute favourites from the modern era - because they are about 95% faithful to the originals :) The figure technology is different (no O-rings!), and the occasional character got slightly redesigned, but this in no way detracts from how incredible this line really is. I hope Hasbro manages to turn out the majority of the 1982-1985 run before the 2009 movie toyline hits! I am totally in awe that something like this happened - 1980s G.I. Joe packaging and character design is some of the best ever, and now we can recreate that era fairly closely without shelling out $80+ per figure! I enjoy these updates so much that I will likely do a mini-review of every figure I can get - Hasbro really impressed me in 2007 and it looks like they will continue to do so well into the future!
