Introduction to the World of Recluce:
Songs and Prophecies

L.E. Modesitt, Jr.'s Recluce books have everything popular fantasy is supposed to have: battles, romance, magic, and a hero. However, Modesitt's books also have one more thing: culture. The saga of Recluce, for example, has a history with a past, present, and future.

As far as Modesitt has chosen to tell us, the history of Recluce begins when a spaceship called the Winterlance is ripped through a hole in space following a space-battle, and is subsequently stranded on an strange, unknown planet. On this planet is the continent that we now know as Candar, where the stranded group comes to be known as the Angels of Heaven. This story-line is continued up until the present, following the descendents of the Angels until we reach Lerris, the main character of The Magic of Recluce and The Death of Chaos ... a period of hundreds, even thousands, of years (Note: this is not to say Modesitt wrote in chronological order; he started with Lerris and jumped around). Modesitt takes us there not only through his narrative, but also through songs, prophecies, and first-hand, written accounts of the characters. For example, take the following: The Basis of Order [written by Dorrin of The Magic Engineer]; The Book of Ryba [written by Ryba from Fall of Angels and The Chaos Balance, the captain of the Winterlance]; and so on. All of it is here, along with the frequent songs that Modesitt frequently throws in his books and a brief introduction to each set of pieces.

The list is ordered by subject, while the sub-pages are organized by the order with which Modesitt placed them in his books (NOT the chronological order of the stories).
