>>"Indeed," Raven said, fascinated in some idle part of her mind by the
way the voice she used resonated in Solarin's throat. "I'll give my
initial suggestions--the main things we'll have to deal with in an
assault on the Citadel are the shields Savar's got around the place, his
offensive magics and any mages he's got under coercion, the physical
guards, and that damn dragon. There's also the matter of traps, both
magical and mundane, all around the place and on the way there, and the
creatures that just about any large-scale use of magic is going to
attract. The last is, incidentally, why I don't agree with Dak's
suggestion of a Gate; that and the storms those have the tendency to set
off.
"Since my knowledge of magic consists mostly of ways to keep myself out
of it, I won't be of any use on the problem of the shields and other
magery, but I _can_ offer my knowledge of combat and tactics, and what I
know about physical traps and the assassin's art. I can also offer some
possibilities on how to deal with Nirathei." >>
:"Did some say something about traps?": Rang a mental voice that everyone
heard.
With that the wards placed around the entrance of the cave shone bright
white and then a pale purple blue image of a very large wolf enters the cave.
:"Be not afraid, I am Lurker, one of the Last Watchers of this world and
many others. In this world I have some friends who I think can help you,
if you would be so inclined.
One of them is a woman called Shadowdancer, she is an ex-mercenary, with
many hidden talents. The other is a man called Jonnran Weaponsbreaker. His
name implies that he can get through just about any trap he sets his mind
to. I believe that they will be a great asset to your attack of the Citadel."
With this Lurker dispersed the aura of light surrounding him, and sat down
upon his haunches to await their answers, and/or any questions these people
would have of him.

Fallenangel glanced around to see if anyone was going to respond to his
statement, then nodded to the great wolf and quickly stepped forward. "If I
may interrupt?"
"We have been in this clearing a long time - far too long, if you ask me. I
may not have the military experience that many of you seem to, but I do
know a _bit_ about tactics. Frankly, I have the feeling that we should move
- _now_. I personally feel like a 'third wheel' if you will, and a sitting
duck, even with the shields that milord Muranog and Xenon have raised. I
also believe that we should at least get the non-combatants out of here.
Now, you all can sit and make as many battle-plans that you wish - but I am
leaving, and anyone who wishes to join me and complete whatever plans we
have to make on the road is welcome to. I apologize if I may seem
impetuous, but my intuition is saying that _something_ is about to happen,
and I make a habit of relying on it. Since I cannot currently lower my
shields enough to make contact with... someone... who could clarify, I am
forced to trust in that intuition." She inclined her head respectively to
the group, and lowered her hand to Isis's head, where the winged panther
sat regally at her bond-mate's side.
:Isis, if you could help?: Fallenangel asked, then continued, knowing that
the panther would broad-send her next words to everyone in the group with
mindspeech. Raising her voice so those in the cave without mind-speech
could hear her, she said,
"If anyone wishes to join me, I will be near the entrance of the large
cave, gathering the rest of my belongings to depart." Turning, she gathered
up her stallion's reins, and led him away.
Seeing the Knight Jonas standing not far from the group, she grabbed his
sleeve and dragged him with her, ignoring his startled look and
half-hearted struggle. Striding to the cave entrance, she turned to face
him and asked, "Do you have a horse? Or any way to travel? Because like it
or not, I'm not letting either one of you," Fallenangel nodded to the
sword, "Out of my sight."

Etain agreed.
"I also feel this way. A sitting duck is easier to capture than a running
hare, and as I am trained to expect every possibility, I also advise we
move. That is my advice, take it or leave it. The longer we stay here,
the easier it will be for enemies to find us. Not only Savar do we have to
worry about, but also natural enemies of the wild."
Turning, she made her way toward the mouth of the cave to collect her horse
and belongings.
(What have I gotten myself into...) she wondered as she reached the cave.

"Wait!" Solarin's voice, under Raven's control, rang through the
clearing. "What will we accomplish by darting off again? We left the
Midnight Sun at my suggestion, and were then driven into the Kaladh by
Savar's screylinh. Now that we are in this forest we're on his turf no
matter where we go, unless all will agree to enter an elven haven or a
gypsy camp. And given the nature of some of the members of this group, I
find that unlikely--though you are all welcome to prove me wrong.
"_However,_" Raven continued, "Collected here we have enough magical
power and learning to--as far as I am aware, though as I have said I
know little about magery--counter any direct attack by Savar, and enough
fighting power to go a long way toward countering any attack by the
creatures of the forest. And on top of that, at least two of us have
allies that, in an emergency, can be called here to back us up."
She crossed Solarin's arms over his chest. "I've come to the conclusion
that we made a mistake by leaving the Midnight Sun before making any
plans, and I'm against moving out again until we have some--otherwise
we'll find ourselves running out of road before we've got our act
together. In which case Savar will find us easy prey, and I've got some
knowledge of his tender mercies. It's not an experience I'd care to
repeat."

Jonas had once again allowed his mind to wander, as no one seemed to be
accomplishing anything truly important. (Well, I could be doing worse
things than this, I suppose...like what? I don't know, but surely
something...) Allowing his thoughts to meander along that thread, Jonas
realized that, although he had been with the party for some time now, he
still didn't know most of the others; and on top of that, he still
wasn't entirely sure _why_ all these people were out here in the middle
of the forest to begin with. (They keep mentioning this Savar
person...hmm...given that the general consensus is that it's going to
take all of us to defeat him, he must be a pretty nasty person...well,
who's to say that couldn't be fun?) Thoughts of once again being able to
use the Masamune as it had been intended to be used filled his head, and
a small smile spread across his face. Even before he'd wound up (how
_did_ I wind up here, I wonder?) among these various people, he'd had
precious few chances to wield the demon blade. He found that he missed
the utter surety it gave him in combat, the knowledge that _nothing_
could stand against him...
Deep within his thoughts, Jonas was caught off guard when FallenAngel
grabbed his sleeve and started dragging him towards one of the nearby
caves without so much as a by-your-leave, and as a result stumbled
around quite a bit, barely managing to not spit anyone on the Masamune's
point (gah....I love this sword, but damn, it's awkward...) He turned to
ask the Angel why in the God's name she'd dragged him over here, but she
beat him to the question.
>"Do you have a horse? Or any way to travel? Because like it
>or not, I'm not letting either one of you," Fallenangel nodded to the
>sword, "Out of my sight."
Jonas was begining to get uncomfortable with the way she'd been looking
at his sword lately. He had caught her staring intently at is several
times in the last hour or so. (I hope she isn't thinking of doing
anything foolish, like trying to take it from me...I'm actually starting
to take a liking to her, I think, and I'd hate to have to do anything
messy and irreprable if she forces the issue...) The absurdity of what
he was considering- attacking an Angel of Laoghaire - finally struck
him, and he struggled to keep from laughing in her face, which would
certainly do no good at all. Composing himself, he responded. "Yes,
Bright One, I do have a horse. Unfortunately, I think it likely that he
is back in Port Orris...and who can say where _that_ is in relation to
here...but I've spent plenty....of time walking here and there, so, ahh,
I guess I'll do okay..." With a shrug, he waited for her to respond.
"And one other thing...I was wondering, when you get a free moment,
could you perhaps explain to me exactly _where_ we are and _why_ we're
here?"

'Blade opened her eyes and spoke from where she leaned against her pack. "I
believe Solarin-(Raven*) is correct. But," she turned to Solarin, "What exactly
do you plan to do? I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'fighting power'. How
can we fight if we do not move? If we do not co-operate. There are enough
leaders among our group that there may be segregation among ourselves. I'll
supply the first suggestion. I suggest that we break up. Have one infiltration
group, and one main fighting force. Have at least one mage and one mindspeaker
among each group so we may communicate. Have a rear guard and/or a group that
can act as reinforcements. That is my suggestion. Consider."
She reclined on her pack, and removed the crystal flute to avoid breaking it.
Examining the contours of the flute, she resisted the tide of memories that
threatened to pull her back in time. No sense in getting caught in memories of
yesteryear. Especially memories of a certain little girl.

Muranog nodded as Shadowblade finished speaking.
"My apologies, Fallenangel and Etain, but I must agree with Raven and with
Shadowblade. To leave this clearing without proper planning would be foolish
and dangerous. Nothing short of a god will pass the combined wards raised
by Adept Xenon and myself, and if Adept Savar possessed divine power we
would most likely all be dead already. Thus as long as we remain here we
are safe to plan our next moves. It is when we leave this place that the danger
shall begin, since wards - at least of the kind my people know - cannot be
used to protect a moving group. As to Shadowblade's suggestion, I believe
it has merit. Two smaller groups present lesser targets than one large group,
both to magical and to mundane attack. If we do split as Shadowblade has
suggested, Sable and I would be of most use in the main fighting force: our
kind are hardly suited to stealth and infiltration. But before we leave we
/must/ know far more about the Citadel that is our destination, about its
defences and inhabitants. Adept Xenon and Raven would presumably be
the two most capable of furnishing such information, and I wait eagerly to
hear it from them."
Muranog bowed slightly to Xenon and more deeply to Raven-in-Solarin's-body
as he finished speaking, and waited for someone to answer.

Kay spoke up for the first time among the group. She stood off
to one side with Winddancer at her side, for he had crept up with the
horse to listen to the planning session. "I have been with this group
for a very short time, and don't know most of you, but I must say that
I agree with both Fallenangel and Raven....We must plan, but we need
to move also. Without one, we cannot have the other. I would like to
volunteer to be a Mindspeaker with one group, whatever one you feel I
would do the most good in. Between Winddancer and myself, we have
enough power to broadcast to everyone in this clearing, no matter how
far away they are from me. So I volunteer my services, as fighter,
Mindspeaker, and my meager mage powers, to helping where I am needed."
Kay stopped, and hoped that she had been heard, for she really
didn't want to have to speak up again. Talking to large groups was
always nerve wracking. The caliber of the people was never a problem,
for Kay had been the chieftain's daughter, but the number of the crowd
was always daunting. :Winddancer, be prepared to move out whenever a
decision is made. We will want to be able to keep up. And if you
need to, you will have to ride on the horse. Even though you look
silly....:
Winddancer nipped at her hand, and glowered up at his bondmate.

important...And you're the one that looks silly.: The wolf cringed
inwardly with the inanity of his last remark, and refocused his

>>:It's I that should thank you,: he mind-sent, :for saving my life. I
got a bit too...involved... upon seeing that black dragon, whatever his

:Nirathei,: she responded softly. :His name was....: she sighed. :Or
rather, _is_ Nirathei: She looked about the clearing and found her pack.
It was a bloodstained mess, but it would have to keep until she found time
and space to clean it. She watched Sofaltis as she adjusted the straps
back to the proper length and clipped the whole contraption back about
her. The effects of his ordeal still seemed to be lingering about him, in
the nervous, overcautious demeanor.
>>Calming down a bit, he sighed, watching the dragon watch him, and he
smiled at her. :And yes, my sword... It's over that way, about half a
mark's walk.: He pointed as he sent, without looking. Nothing magical,
merely, good direction sense. :I lost it when he grabbed me, and that
sword... Is special.:<<
His voice trembled. She heard it distinctly... perhaps it rose from his
attachment to the sword. He was so young, and so like her old playmates
from home, she had hard time believing that he had grown up out in these
Cold Lands, far from the shores where dragons and elves lived in closest
camaraderie. She cast a glance in the direction he pointed, not liking
the look of the close web of trees and brambles she saw there. She was
aching to try out her wings, to discover exactly how much recovery was
needed, and most of all, just to feel the press of wind against her sails
and praise the Mother that she could still fly. She felt inexplicably
well, the lingering physical weariness almost canceled out by the odd
lightheartedness she felt. It was as if someone else had taken a share of
some great burden she had carried. A burden she had never even known was
hers. She felt wonderfully whole -- and hungry -- but the hunger would
wait. There was life to be lived right now.
Some branches had snapped from the trees in this small clearing, and there
was enough room for a small dragon to gain the sky through the gap.
Giving in to the rush of heady excitement that came with thoughts of
flight, she made up her mind in an instant. She gave no warning but a
clear, ringing mental laugh, green as a sunwarmed sea, and bounded
forward, looking for all the world like a vastly overgrown wolf pup at
play. :Better -- I shall have us there in only a moment!: she exclaimed
without pausing, and in a flash had grasped the young ranger securely by
the shoulders and vaulted for the sky.
Her wings ached a bit as she rose above the treetops, but she knew it
would be only a few short days before they were as strong as ever. (And
thank you, Xenon, for your help), she added to herself. She craned her
neck down to look Sofaltis in the face. :Where did you drop the sword
now?: she asked. If her guess was accurate, Nirathei probably left a
larger hole in the tree cover than she ever could manage, and that would
be easy to spot from the air. Spiraling slowly over the trees, she waited
for Sofaltis to direct her.

slanted eyes. "I _do_ think that 'Blade's suggestion is a good one. I've
been in the Citadel and have a general idea of its layout, though Xenon
no doubt knows it better and more currently. I suggest that at this
point we start sorting ourselves out into three groups--those who can
aid an infiltration party, those who would be best in the attack force,
and those who really don't need to be risking their necks in either. I'm

She paused and thought about Solarin's last bit. "I don't know if we should wake
some of them up. There are ones like Darro who are unconscious for reasonably
understood reasons. And there are others who need rest. But you are right, they
need to know."
:Ynys, dear, is there any way that you can wake the ones in the cave gently?:
:I'll get the bard...:
'Blade mentally nodded, and told the group of what Ynys was doing. "Anyone else
who wants to aid waking them up? I'd go, but I don't exactly have the temper for
waking sleepy people up." She shook her head at that. (I have got to get more
control over my temper. But till then...)
Ynys turned around to catch the Bard's eye. Neighing softly, she motioned her
head towards the group by the fire. (I hope she gets the point).

Jonnran awoke from a sound sleep to an empty bed. He looked towards the
window, and saw what he was looking for. Shadow, one of his short names for
her full name Shadowdancer, seemed to be exactly that, a shadow. He could see
her outline, framed in the window by the full moon. (No wonder I love her so
much), he thought. (She is so beautiful, even thought she doesn't think
so. I don't know what I would do without her, I would be totally lost.)
With that thought, Jonnran sat up in the large, comfortable bed, and asked,
"What are you doing out of bed? Come back here, I miss you at my side."
Shadowdancer turned to him, "Well, I don't think that that will be possible,
the coming back to bed, I mean. My little friend, or is that large hairy
friend, has decided that we have had enough sleep, and rest. Seems that he
has decided to come out of "'Lurking', and put his nose into this World's
business, again. He seems to think that we, and they, need help.
Shadowdancer pulled the sheets, and blanket off the bed. "Off that cute tush
of yours, I am going to need your help getting our gear together. Pack all of
the essential gear, you know what I mean. Also pack all of the dry, and camp
rations you can get your hands on. Looks like we are going to need them. I

his band should be here in about 20 minutes. I'll get our mounts ready, meet
your in the forecourt in 30 minutes, to load the pack horses.", saying this as

Shadowdancer turned and grabbed her throwing daggers, 16 of them, and placed
them on her person. Calling out to Lurker ::"Okay, you hairy fiend, let those
people know that we are on our way, and don't let them get too spread out.
Try to get them to stay put, if they have to move, keep them together, and try to
get them to head in our direction. We should be there in about 4 hours, with
some luck."::
"Well, do you feel ready for a mission? Seems that we are going to go up
against the Citadel, and her Master." Walking towards Jonnran and giving
him the kiss he was looking for.
"I feel ready. The scars from out last outing have started to fade, and have
stopped screaming at me, every time I stretch in any direction." With that he
slapped Shadowdancer on the behind and turned towards the armory, calling for
Felicity as he went.
The Hawk-Eagle stirred on her perch ::Asleep, not wake til the sun rises,
leave alone!!:: With that she started to go back to sleep.
::Wake up feather head, we are going to be leaving shortly, do you want to be left behind?::
::What!! NO LEAVE ME PAPA!!:: With that she stirred to wakefulness,
stretching her pinions. ::Come with you when you leave. Tell me when
ready.:: Then she took to the sky in search for her breakfast.
