Notes From My Pennsic  Class on
Top Bar Hive Beekeeping
And a few of my favorite beekeeping links.
Both of the images on this page are taken from James Satterfields excellent page on Top Bar Hive Beekeeping website at
http://www.gsu.edu.~biojdsx/main.htm

He got them from  Paul Magnuson, who, I must assume retains all rights- if my having these images here is a problem, please contact me and I will remove them promptly.

This site is by far the best resource on the web for anyone interested in Top Bar hive beekeeing- Do visit it!

This is one possible way of constructiong a  TBH.  The hive I keep looks much like this one- except I put my enterances on the short ends.

The key to keeping honeybees in TBH's is the top bar itself. The width of the top bar determines the center-to-center spacing of the combs which the bees build.
The drawings of the top bars indicate the references to dimensions that are in the text, dimensions which I copied in the above paragraph. The hardboard strip which projects downward from the center of each tb can be replaced by a groove into which foundation can be waxed.
The lettered dimensions in the above drawing are as follows: A is 46.5cm + twice the thickness of the side planks; E is about 20mm; D is 35mm (+/- 1mm) for Italian honeybees or 32mm for African honeybees; F is about 10mm; G is about 5mm more than the thickness of a side plank.
