Learning experiences. None of us goes through life without them. Not a journalist by profession, I'm just a fan who is usually cautious but at times caught up in the excitement and happenings in fandom like everyone else. It is not always the most level-headed atmosphere in which to make decisions. For my part, I've always wanted to try to collect information in one place so fans could keep up and catch up on what is going on in the Highlander Universe. Sometimes it's hard to decide whether or not to post something here. I feel that in most cases I must still at least let people know what is going on and let them make up their own minds. This is what I did in the case of the sudden appearance of the script. Since it has been removed, I've had time to think and I've had a change of heart and come to a decision.
The posting of an unconfirmed draft of the Highlander IV script out on the internet was NOT something done in the interest of fans. We can not even assume that the person putting up the page is a fan or cares one way or the other about how this affects everyone involved. Of course it raises a very long list of questions about the ethics involved in acquiring such a confidential document and then posting it for all the world to see.
To some it mattered little whether they read the script now. They will still go to see the movie and enjoy it no matter what. There are many fans however who so love Highlander that they could not resist reading a part or the whole of it and wished they hadn't. They will still go and see the movie and enjoy it. That is not the point though, is it. What the perpetrator of this act fails to understand is that some of the excitement of "all good things come to those who wait" has forever to some extent been ruined for some. The wonderful anticipation of sitting with friends in a darkened theater, discussing what might happen, what they hope happens and how wonderful it will be, while awaiting the lights to go down. The thrill of watching the title "Highlander" mythically appear on the screen and the first scene materializing out of the darkness and coming into focus. It really is, "a kind of magic".
For that reason you will never again see something like this that looks official and essentially, what could be for all intents and purposes, any stolen work referred to or linked to this page. I do not wish to seemingly condone or encourage such activity on this website and put that kind of temptation in the way of the fans. Other rumors or news will still be written up and , as usual, so labeled when mentioned. I hope that Highlander fans will also encourage each other, that any other copies out there of the previously posted script will be treated with confidentiality and not share it with anyone. All the people involved in the making of this film, Peter Davis, Bill Panzer, the writers, the crew and actors deserve that kind of respect. Those of us who don't want the movie spoiled for us can also learn a lesson from this and in the future handle wisely the barrage of information that will inevitably come in the next nine months. We can resolve to be considerate of others who don't want to know the details that may be leaked.
To those of you who are not fans and would think to commit similar acts and attempt to disseminate this type of information, you may not be met with the appreciation that you expect. Don't underestimate the honor and integrity of Highlander fans.
That said, Highlander fans do have wonderful things to look forward to and the coming months will be extraordinary ones. Even before this incident, fans knew that the movie was shaping up to be awesome and there is no reason now for that enthusiasm to diminish. We can look forward to being part of a truly unique experience as advance word about the movie grows and the release date draws near. We have much to celebrate and be thankful for. Bill Panzer, Peter Davis, Adrian Paul, Christopher Lambert and everyone involved seem determined to make us all pleasantly surprised and the chant goes on......Movie, Movie, Movie!!!
