Scully and Mulder go undercover as marrieds (named Rob and Laura Petrie, no less) to probe the disappearances of three couples from an idyllic planned community. While Scully (Gillian Anderson) notes a "death of physical evidence," it's clear something is amiss as the agents arrive to occupy the last house mysteriously vacated. Their very friendly neighbors fervently pitch in to beat a 6 P.M. move-in dealine; a basketball hoop nets Mulder (David Duchovny, 1999 TV Guide Award winner for Favorite Actor in a Drama) a warning about things not "aesthetically pleasing"; and any mention of the old occupants is met with evasiveness.
