The herdbeast are basically cattle and goats. When the first settlers came to pern, they brought earth animals with them like cows, horses, and fowl. One of the animals was the Goat. After many years they became known as HerdBeast. They evolved gradually to have more hair to suit the climate, A bigger stronger build.
The wherrys however are pesky preditorial birds indiginous to pern. The killed many of the other animals of the original settlers had but were later domesticated and raised for for food for dragons.
