Profile: In the universe of Ashake Elspeth Coulter, Dr. Marianne Ellis is still every bit the modern career woman. Yet there are distinct differences between the life she leads and that of her alternate universe double, who inhabits the universe of Princess Sohkarra. A bit more trendy of dress, and tends to enjoy herself a bit more when she has down time by a pint of bitter. Interesting because she makes a career of studying the past! From birth she was intrigued with ancient Egyptian history, born in the shadow of the Pyramids. They always held a mystical fascination for her. Being a scientist, she dismisses ancient theories of magic, explaining it as the Egyptian's proto science. She is a bit arrogant in her assumption that the rest of the world should think as she. For she had to be aggressive to succeed in a male dominated profession. Having a brother who was an Egyptologist didn't exactly help or hurt her success. Often they have worked on the same digs, and in the same museums as a team. They are quite inseparable. Unlike her, he believes that magic and the occult are very real and very dangerous when misunderstood. Sort of like Mulder to her Sculley.
Educated at Cambridge, she is an excellent chemist and scholar. Her grasp of Egyptian history is phenomenal, having absorbed most of it from her family. She is jaded when it comes to popular misconceptions regarding ancient Egypt. Any theories that suggest Egypt required outside help to build the Pyramids or other monuments she dismisses as preposterous poppycock.
She met the Mummies by accident when Princess Sohkarra tried to warn her about a possible attack by Scarab. The mummy she was radio dating happened to be related to one of Scarab's servants. Scarab was convinced this scientist could help him extract his own DNA, and thus clone it. Evidently she thought he'd been watching way too much science fiction.
Burned badly in an effort to save her brother, she was rescued by Rath, the scribe. Instantly there was an attraction betwixt them. The challenge of having a relationship with a 3500 year old Egyptian mummy may seem daunting. But their arrogance and their love of knowledge make them an excellent match. For all her bluster and knowledge she can be a sensitive and caring woman. As Rath can be so, if situations call for it.
However, this version of Marianne was "created" in an upcoming fanfiction by a temporal aberration. While trying to get the Mummies back from a trip to Ancient Egypt, Trynia's machine unwittingly created a breach into an alternate universe. Time had ripped when the Mummies attempted to return and prevent the death of Prince Rapses at Scarab's hand, in response to a wish by Amenhotep of the God Osiris and the Goddess Maat.
Rath, not wishing to be without Marianne asked her if she wanted to accompany them. Eagerly she did. Neither knew of the true consequences. For they were trapped in the past when the irrevocable time rip occurred. The only way to repair the damage was a temporal knitting. Unfortunately this had several side effects. Notably in the lifespan of another dimensional traveler, Elspeth Ashake Coulter. Her own time line was interrupted by the presence of the mummies. Fate was so perturbed that the Goddess Maat herself sent Ashake from her happy life with Rath to deal with this menace. Maat created the alternate time line so Amenhotep's wishes would be fulfilled. Yet to restore balance, Rapses did die so Tuthmosis became Pharaoh after all. But Marianne in the thick of this was trapped in ancient Egypt till Trynia's device returned her. But to what future?
Maat saw the paradox that arose. Two time lines diverged, two realities. An aberrance to retrieve Marianne created a temporal paradox. So simultaneously Marianne was sent to both realities, both alternate futures. The one in which she had never met Rath, and another in which she successfully returned when Sohkarra and Rath resurrected her! Thus two Mariannes exist from one time stream! Two alternates.
Thus the Marianne that returned to the future without the Mummies ended up in a lifetime that was forever changed. Rath had never met her in this new reality. In fact this new reality contained a surprise, the existence of the Bard Lyris. Grief stricken Marianne ended up at the Javagoddess and met Ashake! Sensing the anomaly, Ashake did her best to try and acquaint Marianne to her "new" reality. Knowing from Maat that another version of Marianne came into existence, the Marianne that was resurrected by Sohkarra, she knows this Marianne cannot return. And this is a secret that will be kept for a long time to come. In her new lifetime she is not a forensic biochemist, but rather an analytical chemist that does radio carbon 14 dating of artifacts. Her brother Cameron still exists, but is much more the party animal and womanizer. Still he loves Marianne and shares an apartment with her.
Recently on a dig, Marianne and Cameron met a reporter of the Celt Times. Charles Quinn Cassiday was quite attracted to this spirited analytical chemist. In reality he is the son of Elspeth herself! Intrigued by the strange aura of this scientist, he sought to find out her truth. And in so doing found one who was his match. Still he gives her the freedom to explore her feelings with this reality's Rath. Yet they are just beginning to explore the possibilities of a relationship together!
Abilities: Consumate scientist with interests in history of science in ancient world, knowing a large array of chemical analytical techniques. Possesses pleasant singing voice from years of training in a girl's choir growing up in England. Enjoys singing in a church choir if she has the time. Discipline from music training gives her an edge when it comes to resisting psychic attacks. This and her strong religious beliefs enable her to resist hypnosis from enemies such as Scarab. Can also resist mental probing to some degree from the training Rath has given her. Also her natural stubborness adds to this. She was taught to fight by MacBeth, the scottish immortal king in this universe. In additionHemrata has shown her a number of techniques for self defense without weapons. She prefers to use her alchemical abilities, which are natural and innate due to her Scottish blood, as well as those sword techniques passed on to her by MacBeth.
Armor: She posesses the armor of St. George and St. Andrew, the Armor of virtue, made by Chas centuries ago. Composed of holy steel, an alloy slightly different from mythryl, it gives her resistance to most mystical magic attacks and the blows due to magical weapons. The also armor enables her to transmute base metals into other elements. Since the armor had requisite fire and earth elemental magic, in the hands of a modern chemist with 92 elements, the possibilities are rather more vast. She can summon St. George's shield, a faith armor that blocks dragonfire, fire spells and most magical missles. From her lessons with the fighter MacBeth, she has learned to wield the blade Wavedancer, a fey longsword once belonging to Ashake forged by Ashake's own father. Against larger monsters she uses St. George's avenger lance, a pole arm with a reach similar to most medieval weapons.
She shares a psychic rapport with Chas, which results in their sharing of dreams. This happened quite by accident. All she need do is concentrate on their dream selves and he will know where she is if she is in danger. Sometimes this leads to false alarms, as he is protective of her.
Weaknesses: Elemental transmutation only lasts a maximum of fifteen minutes. Any transmutation takes a good deal of concentration and mental energy, the more she uses her power the more exhasuted she becomes. Unfortunately her power level is drastically reduced, away from Ancient Egypt, limiting the spells she has learned from her time in ancient Egypt. In a fight her inexperience with combat can be a liability if she is alone.
Relationship to others: (Alternate Universe)
JaKal: Rather reluctant to have her know of their existence. Yet he admires her hard work ethic, and she has earned his grudging respect. He knows she is a friend of Ashake, and thus tolerates her presence. But he had been quick to have Rath leave her once he had taught her enough to protect herself.
Rath:In this reality there was a potential for a relationship. Yet it never happened, for he feared she would reject him once she found out his true nature. And she had competition from the presence of Lyris, the muse. Thus, not wanting to create a fracas, she broke off relations and studies with her former tutor. Rath regretted the chance to learn modern science, but he was never as intensely romantically active with Marianne as his Alternate double. Yet he feels responsible to help ease her emotional loss of his affections by being a close friend and confidant, once Ashake explained the situation to him.
Nefertina: Admires Marianne's spunk, and enjoys the fact she puts Rath in his place. Is attracted to her brother Cameron Ellis.
Armon: Not quite sure what to make of Marianne. She is polite to him, and patient.
Presley: A bit amused and scared that his mom might find out Marianne's secret connection to the Mummies. But he's glad to have a grown up from his time allied with the Guardians. Since Marianne provides some financial support as well, it makes it easier on him and Sohkarra. Those gadgets Rath builds need funding from somewhere!
Lyris: Jealous of the fact that Rath feels responsible to this "alternate" love of his life. Although in this reality Rath never consummated a full relationship with Marianne, he still spends time with her, which makes Lyris very suspicious. And her relationship with Marianne is tentative at best. For Rath's sake she tolerates Marianne, and is polite to her.
Ashake: Feels the loss and sorrow that Marianne has experienced in coming to this universe. And does what she can to help ease the pain of transition. She is Marianne's sounding board and confidant. As she tolerates Rath's flings, she is not jealous that Rath has a "responsibility" to her. Yet she does wish that Marianne would consider settling into her new life in this universe with Chas.
Hemrata: Amused at this scientist who has an inside line on ancient Egypt, actually having been there. She actually met Marianne years ago in Egypt when Rath and Marianne were "married". Marianne comforted a bereaved Hemrata and Thar when their father died in the massacre. She had not been told these were his children, assuming they were Setanakt's. For this comfort Hemrata feels sympathy to Marianne and tries to teach her self defense techniques.
Tharakenat: Sees a fellow intellectual in Marianne. Often discusses modern science with her.
Michelle Cassidy: Tolerant at first of her brother Chas' new love interest. As she gets to know Marianne she is singularly impressed with the scientist's knowledge and intelligence. But she wishes Chas would be a little less out of his way to be protective of this scientist, as she sees Marianne's powers are quite formidable. Also she sees Marianne's true transmuting potential, and is a bit jealous. Assists her somewhat in learning to use this power, but realizes that Marianne must grow into the power slowly.
Chas Quin Cassidy: Very smitten with the Chemist. Felt an instant attraction to her. He allows her to pursue a relationship with Rath, for he knows she is confused. But he hopes she will eventually come round to being with him. For he would do anything for her own happiness. That is the nature of love. For he knows Rath in his alternate universe was once taught to love by his mother Ashake before she left. And Rath taught Marianne to love. Thus, leaving her open to love him ultimately. For that was the fate Maat had lay for him. But he does wish she'd be less circumspect about it! Chas is quite intrigued by her intrinsic power to transmute elements, being a blacksmith himself. And she in turn is intrigued by his knowledge of ancient history, for he has witnessed it firsthand! And his irresistible good looks and lovely singing voice tend to melt her affections... all in all difficult to resist.
