This is the album cover.
Back at ConChord 1997 (my last southern California filk convention), there were two special guests from Canada - Lloyd Landa and Karen Linsley (with very crisp "L" pronunciations in their names, almost as if they were veddy British). If I remember correctly, both are professional musicians (I could be wrong, but I forget right now). Their biggest hit of ConChord was a little ditty asking the time-honored question, "Why don't you see horse droppings in western pictures?" Needless to say, it was a major hit. Well, you can imagine my surprise when in November 1999 I got an e-mail from Lloyd (he actually remembered me!) stating that Karen had come out with an album, would I be interested in selling it? Are you kidding?? In a heartbeat!!! Well, here's my review of it:
There is nothing to fault with Karen and Lloyd's musicality. Karen's voice has got to be professionally trained, and it shows. The sound quality of the album is nothing short of phenomenal.
Here's the play list:
Then I started listening. On came "The Road to Roswell." It hit me - hard. So I played it again. And again. And again. And still again, about a two dozen times. It's that haunting. Even moreso than "Merlin" from Kathy Mar's ". . . My Favorite Sings." Granted, Kathy and Karen are different styles of storytellers, but this one is POWERFUL in its own way.
Before Lloyd's untimely death, he and Karen co-wrote a song called "Pioneers of Mars," which has now become the anthem of the movement to put a man on Mars. Karen sang it 10 days after Lloyd's passing and ended it with these words:
To me, that would be the ultimate fitting tribute to a mensch, to a songwriter and singer, and to a truly wonderful human being. "Pioneers of Mars" is available on "To Touch the Stars."
"The Road to Roswell" costs $14.00. It'd definitely worth it.
