Entry A looks like one of the generic "giant floating head with starship" covers of old. I don't find it all that exciting, and it wouldn't entice me to buy the book if I saw it at my local Borders. Also, the words "Star" and "Trek" are too far apart.
I like the teaser at the top, but the artwork seems too crowded and jumbled.
This looks like the Photoshop "cut-and-pastes" we are always being warned about.
I happen to like the old "floating heads" covers. My only problem with this one is that the pictures aren't clear and look out of focus, except for the UFP logo.
This is the typical ST cover, and that's fine. But I like the two more original covers better. But this is better than the rest of them.
Looks professional, but doesn't have the charm of D and E.
Always like it when they show who's in it, and a movie-quality ship shot is always good.
Nice approximation of a late-80s cover.
Your average Star Trek cover and, as such, it stands third for me. There's nothing remarkable or unremarkable about it.
Images look cut and pasted.
Andorian Planetary Council:
Entry A and E are too typical and give no hint of the story.
Great facsimile of a ST book cover that I liked at first. As I studied the design, however, it became more cluttered and distracting. My focus wandered. The elements are well put together - I love the caption above the logo but my personal preference is for something more sleek, less busy. Color choices are solid. Also, without any Andorian specific element it didn't have anything to recommend that I place it above C, E, or D.
Ian's comments:
This one definitely takes me back to an earlier era. That the book even carries a number in the corner adds to the mystery ("Is this somehow a book I missed when it came out?"). While the creator is obviously not that experienced with Photoshop, and some elements are blurred, they have managed to create a cover that answers most aspects of the design brief and does so with existing images of Uhura and Spock that are still look fresh on the cover of a Star Trek novel. That's a great Spock pose! The "brushed gold" effect in the title is also nice; scanners don't normally pick up that gold effect very well. I love the font used on the author's name. The tagline is excellent and, again, so reminiscent of a bygone Pocket ST era.
