In spite of his caution the 21st was still a doomed day for the king. On June 21, 1791, Louis and his queen, Marie Antoinette, were arrested at Varennes, by the royalists, as they were trying to escape the revolution.
The following year on September 21, France proclaimed itself a republic and abolished the monarchy.
Then on January 21, 1793 King Louis XVI was executed.
