DURTHANG : Descriptions
Castle built early in Third Age by Gondor on the ridge on the western side of the Udun, used to guard that entrance
to Mordor.Durthang, together with other similar fortifications, was deserted by Gondor about Third Age 1640.It was later
turned into a orc-hold.
- Robert Foster,The Compete Guide to Middle-Earth
A few miles north, high up in the angle where the western spur brached away from the main range, stood the old castle
of Durthang, now one of the many orc-holds that clustered about the dale of Udun.A road, already visible in growing
light,came winding down from it....

.. the tower of Durthang (which meant "Dark Oppression" in Sindarin,
the elven tongue).
Durthang was one of the citadels constructed by Gondor at the beginning
of this (3rd) age. Like its more famous sister-fortress at Cirith Ungol and
the Morannon Gate, Durthang was designed to monitor the interior of
Mordor and prevent any renewed activity there. However, after the
Great Plague, this structure was abandoned (along with the Morannon
Gate) to eventually become nests of foul creatures.
- Adventures of Mungo Eliah Took, novel (I have forgot the address of the place I found it.Tell me,if you know!)
