The Snaphaunce

The Snaphaunce is thought to have come from the Netherlands during the mid-late 1500's. It was one of the first practical flint arms. The style pictured above is the Dutch style with the lateral protruding sear. The Italian version has a vertical sear like those found in true Flintlocks.

One thing that has been considered was the scarce number of Snaphaunces that have been found in archeological digs of Colonial America. It is thought that many of the Snaphaunces brought over were later converted to English Locks by replacing the separate battery and pan cover with the one piece frizzen.
