Dream Traveler
Psionics Kit
Ability Requirements: Con 11, Int 12, Wis 15
Prime Requisite: Con, Wis
Races Allowed: Any except half-giants
Role: What is a dream? A dream is a series of thoughts, images, or emotions occurring during sleep. These thoughts and images are put together by the subconscious mind. In real life, harnessing the subconscious mind has supposedly been a way of gaining mass psychic powers, but we all know that is just load of BS. In Dark Sun, however, this can be true because psychic powers do exist. So if harnessing or learning of the vast reaches of the subconscious mind can give a person such power, then you know that there is bound to be people on Athas who would try to get that power, and thus was created the Dream Traveler.
These Psionicists have formed an almost cult-like following in their personal quest of exploring the subconscious. The people that make up these groups believe that the subconscious mind is the most powerful thing there is and that with their subconscious mind harnessed to it fullest potential they can destroy any foe and learn any secret. For the most part, they are right. Groups of dream travelers have been known to follow the giant Nightmare Beasts in hopes of bring themselves closer to a being of such power that can haunt peoples dreams. The Nightmare Beasts themselves allow the people to follow them only as long as they are useful in spreading tales of their power and thus further disturbing the humanoid world. Dream Travelers have been known to develop strange and unique abilities which also make Dream Travelers very dangerous.
Weapon Proficiencies: Any allowed.
Nonweapon Proficiencies: Bonus:Harness Subconscious Recommended:Rejuvenation
Armor/Equipment: Standard.
All Dream Travelers start off play with a Dream Band. The Dream Band is a head band made of leather with various decorations (bone studs or designs) on it. The Dream Band's purpose is to store the dreams of the wearer. The act of storing a dream requires the wearer to spend 2 PSP’s, then they just fall asleep and the Dream Band will store the dream that they have. At any time a person who wears the Dream Band can concentrate (at least one round is necessary) and the dream will be played over again for them. As many as 10 dreams can be stored in the Dream Band and the dreams will stay there as long as the person who paid the PSP’s doesn’t regain the PSP’s they spent. The person who paid the PSP’s can choose not to recover the PSP’s they spent if they want to keep the dream. If the Dream Band is destroyed the Dream Traveler can make a new one, the total cost is about 9 cp and the total time spent making it is about 3 weeks, the charater can still do normal things but he must spend a good part of the day working on it or he will have to start all over again.
Special Benefits
Read Dreams-By placing his hand on the forehead of a sleeping person the Dream Traveler can view his dreams. He may not interact with them, he only sees what the person is dreaming of. The Dream Traveler can only view a dream for 5 minutes at a time.
Clairvoyance & Clairaudice-At 5th level, by unlocking the vast powers of the subconscious mind, the Dream Traveler can see or hear (not both) what is going on in an area that is known to him. This is done by unlocking the area of the subconscious mind that deals with these psionic powers. The benefit of this over the psionic power is that it costs the Dream Traveler nothing to use and can be used once a day. What the Dream Traveler does is instead of using their own PSP’s to use theses powers, they force the subconscious mind to access these powers and they become the recipients of the power. Whichever power is used it functions just like the psionic power (either Clairaudience or Clairvoyance).
Dream Implanting-At 6th level the Dream Traveler can enter the dreams of a subject like the dream reading ability they have. The only improvement is that the dream Traveler can modify the dreams to his liking. This can be used many different ways to affect the subject's state of being, from giving them nights of unrest to inducing fear much like the nightmare beasts do. To see if the modified dreams work, the subject is allowed a save vs. spells, if the save was successful the subject dreams a normal dream, if not they dream what ever the Dream Traveler wants them to dream. This ability is suspected to have lead an army under the control of Katal into the path of a Nightmare Beast who killed every man in his massive army. The only thing that suggests this is his war journal which (stated by his scribe), says that his dream told him to "travel to the canyon to the west-- that is where the glory is". This power can be used once every 24 hour period.
Forced Dream-At 7th level the Dream Traveler can enter some one's dreams (just like dream reading) but they can now make someone dream about something they know. By speaking a phrase like "dream of your treasure hoard" or "dream of your fears" to the subject's subconscious they can force their mind to dream of what they say. Once the Dream Traveler has said the phrase, he then sits back and sees everything the subject dreams of, no matter how many rounds it takes to complete the dream. The subject is allowed a save vs. spell to resist his subconscious mind, if he is successful he dreams normally and the power has been wasted. This power can be used only once a week.
Dream Death-This is the last power that a Dream Traveler gains and it is gained at 11th level. By entering the dream of subject (just like in dream reading) the Dream Traveler can force the subconscious mind to turn the subject's dream into the worst nightmare it can create. This nightmare is so real that it can kill the subject in his sleep. First, the subject is allowed a save vs. spell to resist his subconscious, then he is given a save vs. death at the end of his nightmare to see if he will die from it. Unlike any of the abilities above, once the death dream has started, the subject can not be woken up by any outside force. One of the other things that Dream Travelers can do with this power (as sick as it is) is watch as the subject die in his dream. This power can only be used once every two weeks.
Special Hindrances:
Full Night Sleep-To use any of the Dream Traveler's abilities they must have a full nights sleep. This sleep can not be induced by any magic such as Sleep or the Nap spell.
Decreased Defense-While in another person's dreams the Dream Traveler is completely defenseless. No magical spells can defend him, no magical items can help him, and he always has an AC of 10.
Required Powers-When the Dream Traveler is created, the charater must choose the telepathic and psychoportive discipline and must take the telepathic science Mindlink, the telepathic devotion Day Dream, and the psychoportive devotion Dream Travel.
NPC Ex.
Nafak 7th level Elf Dream Traveler: Nafak is one of the few powerful Dream Travelers on Athas and he uses his powers to their fullest by stealing information from someone in their dreams and then blackmailing them or giving that information to the victim's worst enemies. If his victims refuse to pay, and giving the information away doesn't work, he then takes matters it to his own hands, as poor Katal found out. Nafak was once part of a tribe of elf Dream Travelers but the tribe broke apart after the death of their elder in his sleep (the event was seen as a bad omen and tribe broke apart). So Nafak now travels alone looking for people to blackmail and grow rich from.
Nafak is 7’6" and wears a cloak that's white on the outside and black on the inside with a breech cloth underneath that. The cloak has many string-like pieces of leather extending from the back which are used to tie up the long ends of the cloak when he is running. He also has a white leather backpack in which all of his stuff is kept. Nafak’s Dream Band is a white piece of leather with blackened bones set in it. Nafak never takes it off and is still storing the dream he had when his tribe elder died. Nafak has only one marking on his body and it’s all he needs, his body form the shoulders up is all tattooed black.
Nafak has one item which he almost prizes as much as his Dream Band -- a magic sand stone which, when turned on, casts Silence 15’ radius, as per the 2nd level priest spell, on him. Nafak uses this to seek up on his victims without waking them. Every time the stone is used a little bit of the sand stone rubs off and it gets smaller as the charges are used.
