Undead Slayer

Fighter Kit

Ability Requirements: Str 9,Con 10,Wis 9

Prime Requisite: Str

Races Allowed: All

Role: Most people on Athas fear the undead and prefer not to cross paths with those restless souls. But their are a few who prefer to cross swords with them. These slayers of the undead think that the afterlife is something that does not belong on the endless sands of Dark Sun. Some think that these abominations take front seat over all other problems on Athas and should be removed by force if possible. Other Undead Slayers believe that the afterlife is a reward after living a life on Athas and that they should be put back to rest. But if one thing is for sure it is that the Undead Slayers can develop amazing powers to combat the dead. Undead Slayers come for all walks of life and only thing that two different Slayers may have in common is they believe that all undead on Athas should be destroyed.

Weapon Proficiencies: Any.

Nonweapon Proficiencies: Bonus: Undead Lore Recommended: Ancient History, Ancient Lang., Local History, Herbalism (Undead Slayers can choose from Priest Proficiencies at no extra charge)

Armor/Equipment: Standard. Most Slayers are covered with runes and trinkets used as charms and protection against undead. These are from clerics and sometimes from other Slayers.

Special Benefits:

Immunity-Slayers are 25% immune to Fear and Paralysis, this increases at the rate of 5% per level. Slayers also have a 15% immunity to the Revulsion and Despair, which also increases at the rate of 5% per level. This ability comes from the Slayers deep hatred of undead and knowledge of their powers. Both of these powers have a 85% max.

Curing Undead Powers-Slayers can remove some of the undead powers from others. The number of times this can be done is determine by the Slayers level. This requires one round of concentration to use and can be used to cure themselves.

Sense Bonded Areas-At 5th level the Slayers gain the ability to sense any area that an undead creature has been bonded to. They can sense a bonded area from 50 feet away and once they enter the bonded area they can determine the exact size of the area to within 50 square feet.

Advanced Recovery Rate-At 6th level the slayer recovers from the attribute draining attacks of most undead faster then the normal person. The rate at which they recover is double that of what would normally be.

Saving Throw Modifiers-Because of the Slayers experience with undead they receive a +1 bonus to undead magic both mage and cleric. But because of their lack of experience in dealing with living spell casters they get a -1 penalty to their saving throw.

Restore Drained Levels-One of the most powerful things that the Slayers gain (starting at 12th level) is the ability to restore drained levels. This ability works only on victims who’s level was drained by undead. This skill and the other skills of the Slayer have a unknown source, most Slayers say that it just something they can do -- like a wild talent. Others say that it is their knowledge of herbalism (That is why it a recommended proficiency) that they use to make potions and cures against the undead powers, and there is still another idea. Hydres, a high cleric at the Temple of Water in Tyr has found evidence that suggests that at least one Slayer, Rudicant, gains his abilities from a far greater power. She believes that Rudicant is granted his powers from a Greater Water Elemental in the elemental plane of water. So the most important thing that the Player must work out is where his charater gains his powers from: potions, force of will, higher powers, etc. and no matter what you come up with go over it with your DM.

Special Hindrances:

Loss of Fighter Abilities-Since the Slayer spends all of his time killing undead he doesn’t spend the time that most fighters do learning about military tactics and war machines, so the Slayer losses all of the fighter abilities except for being able to train others in weapon proficiencies.

No Followers-Since the Slayer is always out destroying the undead and no wants to get involed with the dead the Slayer never attracts any followers.

Priorities in Combat-Because the Slayer has such a hatred for undead they always attack undead first. The order in which they is the following: Necromancers are on the bottom then Undead and then Free Willed Undead. The Slayer will not move to another target of lower classification until all the targets of the higher classification are destroyed. Also the Slayer will not retreat from battle against an undead unless he is positive that there is no way for him to defeat the undead in his current position.

Specialization Rule-The slayer can specialize like a normal fighter but can not move up into mastery.

NPC Ex.

Rudicant 8th level Undead Slayer: Rudicant grew up in a small half elf tribe that was destroyed by a powerful merchant house leader because he wanted the small dessert pool that kept the village alive. To do this the merchant leader hired a Necromancer to make an small army of skeletons (he thought it would be a waste to use his own troops on those stupid half elves) to destroy the village. On the day that the undead army came Rudicant was with a group of half-elves in the desert. When the group returned to the village, they found it destroyed and the army gone. Since then he has devoted his life to the destruction of all undead abominations that walk Athas. In Rudiment’s early years he was reckless in his pursuit of undead until he ran into a Fael by the name of Tribant. Rudicant thought that he would just rust the undead monster and slay it with his sword. The battle was quick and when it was all over Rudicant had escape at the cost of his left hand, which Tribant had bitten off and eaten right in front of him. Since then Rudicant has leaned to think before he acts and is still looking for Tribant to finish the job.

Rudicant has a very old appearance dispite his real age. His leather armor is cover with the claw marks of the countless undead he has faced, and his +1 bone long sword is covered in runes form Hydres. Rudicant also has one more distinct feature -- when his left hand was bitten off he replaced it with an Obsidian ball that he uses as a mace, the ball has only one marking on it which reads "Death to Tribant."

Rudicant also has many skins of water which were prepared by him. It is this water which he uses remove the various effects that the undead have on people. Each of the skins contains the ground-up spines of the Retutn cactus from the Tyr region, this mixture gives the water an even more gritty taste.
