Okay, so I was watching "Jerry Maguire" over the weekend (okay, okay, I've seen it 4 times already), and I was inspired to write this comparing JM and XF...and quotes that I can picture M&S saying. So here goes.

(cue shippy song "Secret Garden")

Jerry: "I'm the guy you don't usually see. I'm behind the scenes. I'm the sports agent." (FM: "I'm the FBI agent.")

Jerry Maguire (JM) was a guy who was on a fast track to success until some kid made him grow a conscious.
Fox Mulder (FM) was a guy who was on a fast track to success until some kid made him become Spooky.

JM is fired by the shadowy forces above and loses all credibility.
FM is monitored by the shadowy forces above and loses all credibility.

JM gets screwed over by Avery Bishop, then he meets a woman who changes his life.
FM gets screwed over by Pheobe Greene, then he meets a woman who changes his life.

Dorothy Boyd practically gives up her career to stick w/ JM, and she defends JM when other people think less of him. She is his guardian angel, a force that keeps him in check. She has almost blind faith in him.

JM says to DB: "We two are going to be working together. We can't have...atmosphere." (Hrrrrmph. How about UST?)

Late at night, a lonely and desperate JM goes to DB for help. "I was lonely. . . I felt you understood something."

JM and Dorothy Boyd (DB) spend a lot of time on their cellphones.
FM and Dana Scully (DS) spend a lot of time on their cellphones.

JM constantly ditches DB while hopping on planes, jetting around the country.
FM constantly ditches DS while hopping on planes, jetting around the world.

DB takes JM to a fancy restaurant and JM is embarassed by group of singers.
FM takes DS to a fancy restaurant and DS is embarassed by singing people.

DB knows when to leave JM alone.
DS knows when to leave FM alone.

Except for Rod Tidwell, JM and DB were alone in the business.
Except for Walter Skinner, FM and DS are alone.

JM/FM is an idealistic man. Sometimes other people think he's spooky. DB/DS was appalled by his behavior at first.

(cue "Free Falling", Mulder-esque song)

JM (FM): "I hated my place in the world."

JM has a bald, bespectacled mentor named Dicky Fox.
FM has a bald, bespectacled mentor named Walter Skinner.

JM has an annoying co-worker named Bob Sugar.
FM has had annoying co-worker named Alex Krycek.

JM(FM) to DB(DS): "We'll stay afloat."

DB(DS) to JM(FM): "If one of us doesn't say something about it now, we could lose ten years. . . being polite."

JM(FM) to DB(DS): "This moment will be the moment of something fun and inspiring in this godforsaken business and we will do it together."

(cue song that goes: "If you fall, I'll pick you up.")

Rod Tidwell says this, "Jerry Rice, Andre Reed, Chris Carter!" (I dunno which CC he's referring to...this is the scene before the 'help me help you' scene)

Rod describes JM(FM) as, "hanging on by a very thin thread."

*Try imagining JM & DB as FM & DS. This works especially well when they are "horizontal" and the lighting is dark. <eg>

DB (DS): "Everything in my body says that this one is the one! I love him for the man he wants to be, and I love him for the man he almost is!"

DB(DS) to JM(FM): "Sometimes I can't tell at all what's going on in that head of yours." Sometime down the road, they have a rift and they seperate for a while, mostly because of the way JM is "built," and IMO, how he subconsciously pushes away love.

Proposal by the car would also work well for M&S. Suppose they are shutting down the X-files again or whatever, and DS is packing up and ready to leave when FM says: "Wait. . .what if we got married?"

DB(DS) to JM(FM): "If this weekend should turn into next month, and next month should turn into whatever, don't make a joke of your life. You're better than the rest of them."

Partnership grows into friendship, friendship grows into marriage. (Well, this does not apply to M&S but we all know that will be the case in the future.)

JM(FM) to DB(DS): "You complete me."

When their company finally succeeds, JM says to DB: "It wasn't complete because I couldn't share it with you."
Hopeful scenario: When FM finally finds Samantha, he says to DS: "It wasn't complete because I couldn't share it with you."

Last, and this is just a YKYAXFRW kind of thing:

Dana Mulder=DM
Whew! Surely some of you thought the same when you were watching the movie...or else I'm just a freak. <g> I'll have to say, nothing on XF can top Jonathan Lipnicki. :)
