It wasn't all that long ago that I became interested in Star Wars, via one of my best friends. She was reading Truce at Bakura at the time, and explaining the story to me as she read on. A few months later, I picked up a copy of it myself, and had a marvelous time reading it. It was while reading this book that I became interested in the Sith, on account of the attitude taken by Governor Nereus towards Vader, as demonstrated here: "Vader. I knew his Imperial Majesty should never have trusted a Sith Lord."
It was then that I picked up on the mystique surrounding the Sith; until then, I had not known much of anything about Star Wars, except for the major characters and movie info. Regardless, my friend kept reading the SW books, and I was beginning to follow suit. When she was reading the Jedi Academy Trilogy, she told me about "this spirit guy who's taken Luke out of his body." That was my introduction to Exar Kun. Of course, my friend REALLY didn't like him AT ALL. I might have felt the same way myself except for one small difference.
It was December of 1995. I was in the local SmithBooks, while that same
friend was waiting in line, and I happened to look at the audio books section.
Right there was: Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith. I had
never heard of this before, and I picked it up curiously. This is what
I read:
"Darth Vader was a Dark Lord of the Sith - now discover the terror of the Dark Lords who preceded him in this stunning sequel to Tales of the Jedi.Entranced, I came back later and bought it. After listening to it in full, I had to disagree with my friend, and after scouring the local comic book shops for copies of Dark Lords of the Sith and the following Sith War, I couldn't see Kun as a monster with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Since then, we've had many, many, arguments about him. Why the difference in opinion? I reason that the problem arose because she saw him long after the fact; the first time she "encountered" him, as it were, he had been trapped in the Massassi Temples for 4000 years. I first "encountered" him by hearing the story of how he fell; he was an eager student with high aspirations who never intended to be consumed by darkness.Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider are young Jedi Knights drawn into a battle for the survival of the Old Republic. But as the power of the evil Sith spreads across the galaxy, it threatens the existence of the Jedi themselves, and draws one of their greatest allies over to the Dark Side!
Based on best-selling Dark Horse comics written by Kevin J. Anderson and Tom Veitch, STAR WARS: DARK LORDS OF THE SITH is an exciting full-cast audio drama featuring Lucasfilm sound effects and enhanced by selections from John Williams' stunning musical score."
Since then,
I have scoured the net for Kun-related sites, and have only ever come up
with a handful. Worse, many don't have his complete history; rather, they
have the abbreviated "Star Wars Complete Guide to Characters" version,
which completely skips a few key events. On the following pages, you'll
be able to find his complete history, his complete history
WITH my additional comments, a listing of every work he's been in, the
letter I got published in Dark Horse Comics, a list of some my favourite
Kun-related quotes, an essay I've written on him (the result of too much
caffeine and too much sugar at 4:00 in the morning), the webrings I belong
to, and a small picture gallery. There's also a regrettably short list
of Kun-related links; to make this a tad larger, there are also some of
my favourite Star Wars links, among other things..
I am currently looking for a new message board. I'll get back to you. Or, I might just set up an "updates" page, yes?
Join the club!!! That's right, there is now a club devoted to Exar Kun, United Exar Fans (hey, it was late and I couldn't think of a better name).
(not so) NEW - The quotes from I, Jedi are finally available!
The
COMPLETE History of Exar Kun - this isn't short...
If you want just the facts, read this. However, I recommend reading the history with comments... It has
better insights into characters and motivations, and is more entertaining...
Please note, now that I have read I, Jedi, I have decided that it is too biased a report (ha, like that should bother me! Well, no, I mean that the "Horn perspective" isn't appropriate for my purposes.) for me to take an account of events from it. As soon as I can get a copy of the Trilogy (and when I have the time), a more in depth account of that time period will be written. Thank you.
The
Complete History of Exar Kun WITH comments -
the same base facts as above, but interspersed with comments along the
way which make it more interesting.
The
Exar Listings - a list of all the works in which
Kun appears
Exar Kun - Quotes - this is a long list, but there aren't any pictures, so it doesn't take as much time to load as it could.
Essay
and Commentaries Just what it sounds like.
What If?...
I've always wondered about what might have happened if certain other
things had not happened. This section deals with those "what ifs".
