Part 1 by Mary Alice
There it was again. That sound. Not really loud, but loud enough to wake Alex up from her restless sleep. She sat up, rubbed her eyes, and sighed. "Damn, I was really hoping to finish that dream."
She shrugged into her robe and stepped into the hall, bumping into Derek, who was also looking around curiously. "Did you hear that?" he said quietly. She nodded and the two crept silently down the stairs in the direction of the noise.
In the dark library, Derek switched on a lamp. "Nick! What are you doing?" Startled, Nick looked at the two of them in confusion. "uh "
Part 2 by Laura
"Derek Alex " Nick sounded dazed. He looked around and seemed as surprised to find himself in the library as they had been. "What the ?"
"Nick, are you okay?" Alex went over to him. "You've got a nasty bump on the head! What happened?"
Nick winced as she touched the cut on his forehead. "I thought I heard something in here. None of the alarms were tripped "
"And you thought you'd check it out on your own without one of us," Alex chided him. As Alex tended to Nick, Derek scanned the room. "Oh my Gott!" he exclaimed. "Look!"
Part 3 by Clarianna
Nick and Alex followed Derek's gaze upwards to the second level of the library. Even with the limited lamplight, they could see the void in one section of bookshelves where many of their predecessors' journals were archived.
Lights now on, they cautiously made their way up the library's spiral staircase. Derek had a sense of foreboding but his Sight did not enlighten him any further. Journals were shredded and strewn all over the floor, save for one still on the shelf and opened to a page. Alex picked it up and read aloud exactly who the journal's author was.
Part 4 by Randi
"Harry Houdini" Alex read looked up at Derek who stood in shocked silence. Nick let out a low whistle shaking his head as he looked down at the piles of paper lapping at their ankles like water.
"So do you think he's attempting to contact us from the grave?" Nick asked, remembering the stories he had read about the Halloween seances following Houdini's death in 1926. Derek shook his head taking the journal from Alex's hands. "No," Derek said skimming the pages of the journal. "Who or what left this journal for a reason. Perhaps as a clue. A warning of some kind." Then his eyes focused on the almost illegible writing scrawled in the center margin.
Part 5 by Juli C
Nick's head started to throb. At first, the ex-SEAL discounted the sensation, thinking it a remnant from the injury he seemed to have acquired earlier. However, Nick was soon horrified to see that the letters of Houdini's flamboyant writing slide together on the page, the ink strokes finally coalescing into a demonic shape.
Protective as ever, Nick batted the possessed journal from Derek's hands.
Three pairs of eyes watched, mesmerized, as the book tumbled down, the dry pages of the old chronicle rustling like the wings of dead butterflies, until the journal landed among the dying embers in the fireplace below.
Part 6 by Carla
"Oh man I'm sorry Derek!" Nick exclaimed as he witnessed the distruction of the Journal. His head started aching with a vengance now.
"Nevermind, Nick." Derek looked over at Alex who also looked worried. "Are you all right?"
"Fine." Nick lied, sitting down on the floor.
"You're not fine." Alex said, moving next to him. "Headache?"
"Just a little one." Nick grimaced. Derek too looking over Alex's shoulder looking worried.
No one noticed the smoky form moving from the fireplace and escaping the room.
Part 7 by M.J.
The dark, roiling cloud floated down the hallway, the occasional tendril of curling smoke probing like a tentacle. It reached the living room and hovered in a corner of the ceiling. Before it can assume its true form, it must first rest, gather its strength, and feed.
"Maybe we should call Rachel," suggested Derek.
"I'm fine," said Nick irritably. He'd shaken off far worse blows to the head during BUDS. "Right now, I just want to know what's with that journal. Like what made the writing on that page move?"
"You saw the writing on the page move?" asked a puzzled Precept. Derek exchanged another glance with Alex
"Yeah, that's why I knocked the journal out of your hands. Didn't you see it?" Nick looked from Derek to Alex
"No," said Derek slowly.
Alex shook her head. "I didn't see it either."
Part 8 by Susan (ICEBURG82@aol.com)
"Hmm. Moving words. OK, maybe we ought to have Rachel take a look at you." Alex said, although she knew exactly what Nick would say to that suggestion.
Nick shifted his gaze from the remains of the journal to Alex. "No way, I'm fine. Let's just.." Nick broke off as an angry shout came from around the corner. A few seconds later a door slammed shut. He grinned. "Sounds like more teen troubles with Kat and Rachel."
Alex smiled at Nick, but when she saw Derek, her grin faded. "Derek, what is it?"
Derek stood still for a moment, then slowly looked downstairs towards the living room. "There's something.....I can feel it. Come on." With that he started down the stairs with Nick and Alex not far behind him. All three were silent as they entered the living room. Nick started to speak, but Derek held up a hand, abruptly cutting him off. His other hand pointed to the dark cloud still hovering in the corner of the room.
"What is it?" Alex whispered. Nick pulled out his gun and stared at it, then sighing, put it behind his back. He'd finally learned that apparitions don't respond well to artillery. As he took a cautious step forward, the cloud began to move towards the doorway. Before anyone could move, the smoky substance moved like a swarm of bees up the stairway. Suddenly, a piercing scream was heard from upstairs.
Part 9 by Julie (WarChantEd@aol.com)
"That was Kat," screamed Nick as he raced up the stairs. "Hold on Kitty-Kat, we're coming!" yelled Nick He could hear Derek and Alex following him up the stairs. As Nick reached the top of the stairs, another scream pierced the air. "Mom!" screamed Kat." Nick reached Kat's door but before he could open it he was thrown backwards. "Nick, are you alright?" asked Derek. " I'm fine Derek, but we need to get to Kat and Rachel," Nick exclaimed. Nick jumped to his feet and once again tried to open the door. To his surprise, the door opened without hesitation and he ran inside. What he saw filled him with terror.
Part 10 by Kim (SpookyCat4@aol.com)
Kat was clinging to Rachel, with her arms around her mother's waist. Rachel was holding Kat protectively, the dark smoke was circling the two of them. It moved just in front of them and began to shape itself into a form. Nick edged between Kat and Rachel and the smoke.
"Rachel, get Kat out of here." He whispered urgently.
Rachel's unwillingness to leave Nick alone with the apparition stood no chance against her maternal instincts. She nodded at him and eased Kat towards the door.
Just as Derek and Alex appeared, a tendril of the smoke reached out and slammed the door.
Part 11 by LadyViper (LegacyVIP@aol.com)
Kat watched in horror as Nick was lifted up and thrown against the wall. He landed with a loud thud.
"NICK," Kat screamed. He didn't move. Rachel slowly moved her daugther toward the door, while the dark smoke mimicked there every move.
Derek and Alex pushed on the door trying to open it. Kat screamed as the Smoke encircled them.
"Kat, Rachel try to open the door." Derek yelled.
The smoke grew denser around them till you couldn't see them anymore. Nick struggled to move only to see the smoke disperse and the Door burst open with Derek and Alex standing there.
"Where are they, WHERES Rachel and Kat?" Derek asked
Part 12 by Miranda (music_lvr_99r@yahoo.com)
Nick struggled to his feet and looked around. He was shaken but realized immediately what happened that mysterious smoke had TAKEN Rachel and Kat. I dont know, he stammered. They were here a minute ago.
Sounding more cross then intended, Derek stated, Theyre not here NOW. You were the only other one in the room with them. So whered they go?
Alex came to Nicks aid, noting his stricken expression. No, Derek he WASNT alone in the room with them; that cloud........
Thats IT!, Nick suddenly cried rushing past his associates as he raced down the hall. Cmon weve got to HURRY if we want to save Rachel and Kat!!
Part 13 by Metztli9@aol.com
Nick raced after the mysterious cloud of smoke with Alex and Derek not far behind. As he neared the cloud, he could hear Kat's muffled screams.
"Kat!" Nick called.
Nick moved closer to the cloud and a gust of wind knocked him down. Alex knelt down next to Nick and helped him up.
"Kat!" Nick called again.
"Surround it." Derek ordered.
The three of them tried to surround the cloud of smoke, but a large gust of them knocked them down. Nick took out his gun and aimed it at the cloud.Derek put his hand on Nick's and shook his head.
"Nick no. You might hit Rachel and Kat." Derek said.
"How are we supposed to stop it?" Alex asked.
Part 14 by Lynn <chya@tesco.net>
"Alex," Derek ordered, without taking his eyes off the cloud. "Go to the library and find a book called "Legends of LaCargo". It should be on the shelf above the journals. Try looking under 'Shades'."
"I can't just leave you here," protested Alex, "I-"
"Go!" commanded Derek; "You might want to cross reference the relevant articles with Mr Houdini, as well. Now hurry!"
As Alex ran down the stairs, Derek glanced at Nick, and worried at his companions glazed expression.
Nick stared at the cloud, hearing Kats cries. Abruptly, her face and arm appeared, reaching out to him. He grabbed her arm and started to pull.
Part 15 by Kim Marie <scifichick@xoommail.com>
Nick pulled on Kats arm with all his strength. He could hear the child whimper from the pain, but concerned himself with saving her first, hurting her second! Tendrils of smoke reached out at Nick, trying to either draw him in or push him away.
As Alex searched the upper bookshelves for The Legends of LaCargo, Derek moved toward Nick, intent on helping him free Kat from her prison. Hang on, he said.
NOOOO! came a familiar shout from behind them. Startled, Nick lost his grip on Kat, watching her get sucked back into the vapor. He turned and glared at the man who had distracted him.
Philip! he growled.
Part 16 by Elaine <emrobinson@lunet.edu>
Nick rolled his hands up into his sweat shirt, to halt the urge to strangle Phillip. "Explain to me why you did that?" The words flowed from Nick on a wave of anger.
Derek watched the interaction between the two young men. Nick and Phillip were often at odds on how to handle a situation, yet still worked well together. He hoped now would be no different. A slight shift upward in the darkening cloud of smoke caused him to shift his attention. He watched as it flowed towards Alex who watched from the balcony, a large volume clutched tightly to her chest.
"It means no harm." Phillip said his hands reaching out to Nick, hoping to make him understand. "It means no harm."
Part 17 by Mary Alice <malice@legacyweb.com>
"What do you mean? No harm? But " Nick jerked his arms away from Philip, swaying as he nearly lost his balance.
Alex stepped forward to steady the young man. "Easy, Nick - youre not doing them any good by making your head any worse. You probably already have a concussion." She turned her direction to the priest in front of her. "Tell us what is going on, Philip. Oh, and by the way, welcome home."
A ghost of a smile touched Philips mouth. "Thanks, Alex. Ive missed you too." He gathered the group of them within arms length and whispered, "Now, this is what we need to do."
Part 18 by Laura <laurao@ix.netcom.com>
"The Legacy has faced this creature before," Philip said. "Houdini spoke of it in his journal. It's also mentioned here," he added, taking the book that Alex had retrieved.
As his hand touched hers, Alex felt a chill go through her. She stepped back instinctively and gasped, "Philip?" Then, she knew the truth. "It's not Philip!"
'Philip' laughed and darted away from them. He held the book above his head and chanted something in a language that none of them recognized. His features seemed to change into something unhuman. A moment later the priest and the cloudlike creature vanished.
Part 19 by Clarianna
"*&@#$!" cursed Nick, who felt like ramming his fist into a wall. "Sooooo, Derek. Do YOU have any experience getting yourself out of a locked straight jacket while being held upside-down? WHAT do we do NOW, huh?!?"
Derek sighed and ran his hand through his hair. "C'mon, we have to figure out what we're dealing with..."
Alex interrupted him with a revelation, "Jeffrey! I'll call Jeffrey...this is right up his alley!"
Nick and Derek looked at her with disbelief.
"Jeffrey STARR? You're not serious, are you?" Derek asked as Alex made her way to the nearest phone.
Part 20 by Randi
Before Alex could pick up the phone voices chanting could be heard coming from outside. With quick silent movements Derek made his way to the front door taking a deep breath before jerking the double doors open wide. From within the fine thick grey mist hanging over the ground the chanting continued. Only bits and pieces of words could be heard. Indistinguishable, Derek stepped forward.
"Don't!" Rachel cried, the word ripped from her throat. Derek turned to look at the pained expression on the woman, fully expecting her to lay blame for young Katherine's disappearance at his feet.
"Rachel," Derek said,
part 21 by Juli
"Rachel," Derek repeated, unsure of the identity of the woman in front of him. After all, just moments before, he'd witnessed the psychiatrist disappear into the mysterious cloud along with her daughter.
Sensing his hesitation, Rachel opened her arms wide in a beckoning gesture. "Derek," she cried out in a voice husky with emotion.
Before he knew it, the Precept had inched towards her a step or two, but his forward progress was stopped by Nick's cautionary hand on his shoulder.
"I think we better be careful here, boss," the younger man advised, remembering the simulacrum of Philip earlier. "Something tells me that's not our Rachel."
part 22 by M.J.
Rachel lowered her arms. "You are correct," the simulacrum acknowledged. "I am not your Rachel."
"What is it you want from us?" asked the Precept warily.
"To exist," it replied simply. "To be again."
"Why have you taken two of our friends?" demanded Derek.
"It is a fundamental law that for one thing to live, another must die," the apparition intoned implacably.
"You can't have them!" shouted the Precept angrily. "They're not yours to take."
"I only need one of them. You choose...decide which one I shall release. The other I will keep. " There was a crafty glint in its eyes.
"That's monstrous! I can't do that!" declared a horrified Derek. "Then they both die. Mother or daughter?" the faux Rachel taunted cruelly. "Choose."
part 23 by Susan
Nick took an angry step forward, but was stopped by Derek's outstretched arm.
"No, Nick. We must not do anything to further endanger Rachel or Kat." Derek focused his attention on the spirit before him. "You cannot do..."
"Enough!!!" The figure faded back into it's former cloudlike shape. "Chose in one hour, or they both perish!" The cloud passed through the door, and all was silent.
After a few seconds of stunned silence, Derek turned to the others. "Nick, go through the database and look for anything about Houdini regarding a creature like the one we've just encountered. Alex, come with me. We've got to move fast if we want to save Rachel and Kat."
part 24 by Julie
"Derek what do you have planned?" asked Alex.
"I'm not sure, but we have to find a way to attack this creature,' replied Derek.
"What if we don't Derek, how can we choose between Rachel or Kat!" cried Alex.
" I found it!" shouted Nick as he ran towards Derek. "Houdini wrote about a mystical cloud that kept taking precious things from him and making him choose which ones to return. He finally stopped making the choices and the creature went away."
" So all we have to do is not make a choice and the creature will leave," asked Alex.
"Well it's not that simple Alex, the creature will leave, but with Kat and Rachel, so we still have to find a way to free them, without having to choose which one to take," explained Nick.
"Hopefully we won't have to make that choice," said Derek.
part 25 by Kim (spookycat4@aol.com)
"Derek, there's something else!" Nick's excited voice rose, as he started searching the bookshelves.
"Nick, tell us what you discovered." Derek demanded, as he and Alex hurried to where Nick was frantically scanning the shelves.
"There's a book Houdini found. I think it's here. It's called Mystic Clouds. Houdini said that the book told him how to defeat the cloud." Frustration was evident in Nick's voice. He was sure he'd seen that very book, on these shelves, but he couldn't find it.
"I've got it!" Alex called excitedly.
Just then, the cloud reappeared, whiriling wildy in a rage. It tossed the occupants of the library around the room like rag dolls. Nick slammed against the massive desk and didn't move. Derek was tossed into the bookshelves and covered his head as the heavy volumes tumbled off the shelves on top of him. Alex clutched the precious book, as the cloud threw her to the floor. The book was ripped from her hands and thrown into the fireplace.
Part 26 by LadyViper (LegacyVIP@aol.com)
Nick and Derek rushed to the fireplace trying to reach for the burning book. Nick grabbed the poker from the fireplace stand, finally freeing the now charred book.
Derek picked it up gently, he quickly thumb through the pages looking for an entry on this cloud creature. He grew silent and staring at the burned pages.
"Derek? What is it?" Alex questioned
"Only part of the incantation is here. And from what I've read, We could lose-------"
He never finished when the house shook from a quake.
"NOW what?" Nick yelled as they all took cover.
Once the shaking had stopped, Derek stood up glancing around to check on friends.
"Where's Alex?" Derek questioned, turning to look at Nick who now held lifeless Kat in his arms.
part 27 by Music Lover <music_lvr_99@yahoo.com>
My Gott, exclaimed Derek. Whats happening here?!
Nick was as stunned and speechless as the Precept. One minute he was shielding Alexs body beneath the library table and the next he was holding Kat, seemingly lifeless, in his arms. There was no time for explanations or ponderings, though. He bent over and began the resuscitative techniques he had learned in the SEALs.
Coughing and sputtering after nearly 20 seconds, Kat stirred. Suddenly she gasped for air and screamed out ........ MOM!!!!! Its got my Mom!
Breathing a sigh of relief Derek knew that this had gone on long enough. Nick, he ordered. I need your help! Its time we finish this.
Part 28 by Metztli9@aol.com
They stood up, Kat safely in Nick's arms.
"We have to save my mom." Kat said frantically.
"Derek, what were you going to say before that little earthquake? You said something about losing?" Nick asked.
Derek opened the charred remains of the book he still held in his hands. He turned to the page about the mysterious cloud.
"If we don't stop that thing, we'll lose both Rachel and Alex forever." Derek told Nick.
"No, I don't want to lose my mom." Kat cried.
"You're not going to lose your mom." Nick told Kat kissing her on her forehead.
"So what are we going to do? You said half the incantation is missing."
part 29 by Lynn <chya@tesco.net>
"Nick, go to the Control Room and check the Legacy database and the Internet. Take Kat with you." Commanded Derek.
"What about you?" asked the ex-SEAL, unwilling to split up.
"I'll stay here. I have some ideas I want to follow up."
With a quick nod, Nick ushered Kat out of the Library.
In the Control Room, Nick sat hunched over a computer, with Kat close by his side, afraid to leave his protection.
"Yes! I've got it!" said Nick suddenly. He hit the Print button before he notice Kat, staring at the other side of the room.
"Mommy?"
Rachel was beckoning her daughter. Mesmerised, Kat walked slowly toward her mother.
"Kat, no!" Nick shoved his chair back, moving to protect Kat. He stopped suddenly when a gentle, yet inhumanly strong hand rested on his shoulder.
part 30 by Kim Marie <scifichick@xoommail.com>
Nick was uncertain how many more surprises he would receive that night. Turning, he found himself staring into the face of a ghostly spectre as he said, It cant be. You went to Hell I saw you.
Nothing is as it seems, Nick, William Sloan stated. Tell Derek ...... and remember, Nick. NOTHING is as it seems. Then the image was gone.
Turning back to see what happened to Kat, he realized that he was alone in the Control Room. What the Hell is going on?! he voiced as he headed into the Library. Once more, shock assaulted him as he entered the room.
part 31 by Mary Alice
In the library, Derek was sprawled haphazardly on the couch. A long, graceful leg was draped over one end of the couch while an arm was flung over the other. Derek's shirt was open to the waist and he looked at Nick with a glassy-eyed expression.
"As you can see... I've found Alex" Derek said, gesturing vaguely beside him. Leaning over the back of the sofa, Alex gave Nick a sultry smile and ran her hands over Derek's bare chest.
"This is what we've always wanted, Nick. It was only a matter of time"
part 32 by Laura
"Yeah? Well time is something that we don't have a lot of at the moment," Nick replied.
Derek said nothing. In fact, he seemed dazed. Nick tried not to reveal how alarmed he was. "Derek?"
"Don't worry, Nick," Alex said softly. "Everything is under control now." She continued to stroke her fingers lightly against Derek's chest. Her fingers seemed to be tracing a luminescent pattern onto his skin. Nick didn't know what the pattern meant, but he knew what it was. A sigil. Her voice changed. "It is what *we've* always wanted " She laughed. "It was only a matter of time."
part 33 by Clarianna
Nick stood there, trying to make heads or tails of the situation. Unsure of what to do next, he repeated in his head what Sloan had told him moments before, "Nothing is as it seems."
Alex continued to trace around the outline of the sigil with her finger and focused her attention on it while making good use of her other hand on Derek's upper thigh. The precept struggled and managed to get out of the grips of the will of the demon that possessed Alex to tell Nick, "Break covenant.... find book.... matches sigil... in vault ... Go! NOW!
part 34 by Randi
A tortured wail sent him racing back to the library only to find Derek's body laying on the floor. Dropping to his knees Nick gathered Derek's lifeless form to his breast as a scream of anguish was ripped from the depths of his soul.
"Mr. Boyle," a familiar voice asked, "care to explain yourself?"
Looking up Nick found Sloan, Derek and his fellow colleagues looking at him oddly as he clutched an oversized teddy bear to his chest.
"But you're in Hell." Nick stated before he could think.
"Thank you very much Mr. Boyle." Sloan said giving Derek a strange look.
part 35 by Juli
"Thank you," Sloan repeated, "for that most excellent segue. Yes, Mr. Boyle, I *am* in Hell..... and, now, so are you."
Nick felt a cold draft crawling up his back. Twisting his neck to look over his own shoulder, the ex-SEAL discovered that he was dressed in footed pajamas -- with a half-open butt flap.
"Aw, idn't he just pwecious?"
The ex-SEAL winced when he heard the artificially bright female voice. Hastily buttoning up his flap, the he turned to face his female Legacy colleagues -- all currently dressed like the Tiny Toons character, Elmira. Right down to the skull-adorned hair bow.
"We'll take him home and luv and hug and squeeze him," Rachel-as-Elmira chimed in.
"We always wanted our vewy own SEAL action figwure." Kristin-as-Elmira added.
Alex-as-Elmira smiled slowly, revealing her fanged teeth. "He's so sweet, I could just... eat... him ....up."
"Uh-oh, Toto," Nick quipped to the teddy bear still in his embrace. "Somethin' tells me we're not in Kansas anymore."
part 36 by M.J.
Alex sidled up to his left and blew gently in his ear. Not to be out done, Rachel-as-Elmira rubbed a firm, ripe breast against his right arm.
The ex-SEAL pressed a hand to his forehead.
"I'm getting a headache," he muttered through gritted teeth. "There's got to be some kind of pattern to all these events."
Hmm. This all started when he went to check the noise in the library. The library! He was sure it contained the key to this nightmare.
What the hell he thought.
ŅThereÕs no place like home... thereÕs no place like home...thereÕs no place--.Ó
He blinked and suddenly he was looking at Derek's concerned face.
part 36 by Susan
Derek sighed with relief as Nick slowly opened his eyes. "Welcome back, Nick. How are you feeling?"
Nick slowly gazed around to find himself lying on the couch with Derek sitting across from him in a chair. "What's going on? I.....Rachel! We gotta save Rachel!"
Derek got up to restrain his the injured man from getting up too soon. "Whoa, easy. You banged your head pretty hard. You've been unconscious for almost an hour."
"But the cloud, it..., " Nick trailed off as he saw Derek's expression go from concerned to confused. He lay his head back on the cushion as he tried to piece together the events of the night. "I heard a noise in the library and went to check it out."
Derek nodded. "We all heard the commotion. But when we got down here we found you laying on the floor next to the cat. Near as we can figure, you must have tripped over the cat and hit your head." Derek paused for a moment. "Funny, we haven't seen that cat in almost 4 years. I wonder where it was all this time."
Nick stared at Derek for a second before laughing. "It was all a dream. Man, I really oughta lay off those Twinkie protein shakes."
Nick slowly sat up and swung his legs onto the floor. "I need a drink. This has been one hell of a night." Derek helped him up as they both headed for the kitchen.
Nick slowed up a bit, gazing again at the cat who had caused this whole crazy night. "Well, I guess I should get you a nice 'Welcome Back' bowl of milk." As Nick started again towards the kitchen, he turned for one last look and stopped as the cats eyes began to glow red before it turned and walked away. Nick shook his head gingerly. "Man, I need a vacation."
