In the previous episode, the vamps had broken in and taken Giles. When we see him forst in the season finalle he is just coming out of his sleep state from being knocked out. Angel is there waiting for him to wake and as soon as he does, Angel tells Giles why he is there. Giles finds out that Angel was unsucessful in his first attempt to free Acathla from stone and that he is there to tell Angel what he is doing wrong. Angel tells him that if he doesn't tell him-he will torture him. Well, you dont think that Giles is going to help Angel unleash a monster do you? Of course not, so Angel tortures Giles. When Giles wont let up, Angel begins to get totally pissed and he calls for the chainsaw to kill Giles. Spike comes in and reasons with him not to kill Giles. Spike then ushers in Drusilla who makes Giles see with his heart Mrs Calendar and then gets him to tell them how to do the spell to release Acathla. Giles is so delirous from all the torture Angel has put on him, he doesn't realize what he has done until later. When Xander and Buffy break in and Xan finds Giles, he at first doesn't want to go with him because he thinks they are tricking him again-but Xan changes him mind about that and they flee. The next day at school, the affects from all the pain her still visible, he has a big gash on his forehead, but he is there no less. He doesn't know what happened to Buffy either-but he has to go on not knowing.
