Mrs. Summers is brought into the story when the police show up at her house looking for her daughter for suspicion of murder. They dont find her there so they leave and Joyce goes to look for Buffy on her own. When she is making another stop by her house, Buffy is walking up with some stange guy. She gets out of her car and rushes over to them demanding to know who he is, where Buffy has been and whats going on. But before much can get said, a vamp jumps out from some bushes and attacks them. Thats when Spike and Buffy fight and kill hi right before Joyce's very eyes. She is totally dumbfounded. This is when Buffy tells her she is the slayer. They go inside and while Buffy is on the phone with Willow, Joyce and Spike are left alone in the livingroom by theirselves. Ms. Summers tells Spike he looks familiar and he reminds her that a while back she hit him with an ax to get him away from Buffy. After Spike and Buffy figure out a plan, he leaves and Ms. Summers starts to totally wig. She doesn't exactly know what to say or do-but comes to the conclusion that calling the police would be the best way to start. Buffy tells her she can't but Joyce wont listen to her. When Buffy gets a little snotty and tells her mother to just get another drink-all hell brakes loose. Joyce throws the cup down and tells Buffy that she has to stay home and clarify herself. Buffy tells her to open her eyes. How could she not realize it before then? All the weird occurences, washing blood out of Buffy's clothes. But Joyce still wont except it. She thinks Buffy is going mental and she wont let her leave. Buffy tells her that she has to go save the world but Ms Summers still wont let her leave and she grabs her. Buffy shruggs her off-but with her having that superhuman strength, Joyce goes back into the counter and she tells Buffy if she leaves-she shouldn't bother coming back. Buffy has to leave and so she does. The next morning, Buffy has come back and taken a lot of her things from her bedroom and when Joyce wakes up, she goes to Buffy's bedroom and finds a note. We dont get to see what it says-but it obviously says something Joyce doesn't like because she starts to cry.
