Yes, some very un-practical people are actually thinking of re-making the classic film, Psycho. Why? I dont know! Every re-make turns out to be crap! And some very talented people have actually attached their name to this project too! Who? Glad ya asked! First of all, planning to produce the film, I assume, is Brian Grazer who has produced a number of great flims including: Backdraft (1991); Far and Away (1992); Apollo 13 (1995); Fear (1996); The Nutty Professor (1996); Ransom (1996) and the upcoming Nutty Professor 2. And Gus Van Sant is planning to direct and he just did the oscar winnning Good Will Hunting (1997). I guess they aren't as smart as we thought they were.....
But maybe it might actually be good. I know some might say I'm being a traitor to the horror genere, but think about it. In color...young fresh on the rise 90's actors. Maybe it'll be better than all the other re-makes it preceeds...you never know. It has been known to happen....I'll at least check it out in theaters to see what it was like-I sugest you do too!
Daily Variety's Dish column reports that Gus Van Sant and Brian Grazer have a summer start date for their planned Universal remake of Psycho. They also report that several offers have been made to leading actors to play the roles. Vince Vaughn (The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Swingers) has been offered the role of Norman Bates. Nicole Kidman (Malice, The Peacemaker, To Die For) is in talks to fill the Janet Leigh role, though she may have scheduling problems. Julianne Moore (The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Tale from the Darkside: The Movie, Boogie Nights) is in talks to play Lila Crane, who investigates her sister's disappearance. Finally, William H. Macy (ER, Boogie Nights, Fargo) is considering the role of the police investigator, who uncovers the secrets at the Bates Motel. All parties are still tenative and no one has signed to date.
Though Imagine Entertainment and Universal Pictures are staying tight-lipped about Gus Van Sant's upcoming remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, sources tell Daily Variety that Anne Heche and Julianne Moore have already committed. Anne Heche (I Know What You Did Last Summer) is said to have taken the role of Marion Crane (made famous by actress Janet Leigh in the original 1960 version), after Nicole Kidman had to turn it down due to scheduling problems. Word is that Julianne Moore (Boogie Nights) will play Heche's sister, Lila Crane (originally played by Vera Miles), who investigates her sister's death. The studio had no comment on the casting.
Other casting news is that Vince Vaughn is still the name getting the most mentions about playing the new Norman Bates, however a new player has just entered the field - it's the X-Filer himself David Duchovny. Is this rumour going to pan out? Possibly though I doubt it. More likely is if Duchovny is in it, then he would be playing Marion's boyfriend.
Cameras start rolling this summer on Gus Van Sant's remake of the Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 classic PSYCHO. Release date said to be: December 4, 1998.
Universal is putting a hold on all prints of the original and the first two sequels. Joe Stefano's original '60 script is supposed to be the one Van Sant is using. I've also heard everything's proceeding apace for filming to begin this month.
Actor Vince Vaughn (Swingers, The Lost World) who had been rumored as to be thinking over the idea of being in the Psycho Re-Make has finally signed on to play the role that made Anthony Perkins famous and scared hundreds years ago. Vaughn will play the role of Norman Bates, the killer "possesed by his mother" in the upcoming remake being directed by Gus Van Sant. Rumored to have a release date of December 1999 (up against SCREAM 3? I dont think so! Especially with all the bad press its already getting!)
The last bit of casting on this horror remake has been officially wrapped up with Daily Variety Dish reporting that Viggo Mortensen (G.I. Jane) and William H. Macy (Boogie Nights, Fargo) have signed onboard. Macy to play the Sheriff Chambers role and Mortensen to play Sam Lomis, Marions lover. They join the major characters played by Vince Vaughn (The Lost World), Anne Heche (Six Days, Seven Nights) & Julianne Moore (Nine Months).
Also, Anne Heche was on Rosie O' Donnell a few days ago, and mentioned that Psycho would start filming in July 1998, in Los Angelus, and would be filming on the original sets. By that I dont know if she meant sets that would look the exact same as the years before or the actual sets they shot on in the 60's. But, would those sets even still be around these days? Anyways, another thing is a found a link to the first Psycho Re-Make page out there. Click HERE to enter.
In other news, actress Janet Leigh recently had an opportunity to talk about the remake of the upcoming Psycho at the Cannes Film Festival. Leigh expressed doubt that the film would be shocking, since everyone already knows about the film, and more specifically, about the shower sequence. "...there's no longer the element of surprise. Where's the shock value?" she stated. Leigh also expressed disatisfaction about the filmmakers decision to do the remake in color. Leigh will be appearing this fall, alongside her daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, in H20: Halloween 7.
With some copies of Armagedon, a trailer for the Psycho re-make can be seen. There is no footage from the new movie-but it does show hella cool scenes from the first film. Or so I've heard, I haven't seen it my self-but as soon as I do I will let you know more about it.
A lucky fan recently took a tour of Universal Studios, and came across the famous film set of the original. What was interesting however, was that there were workers constructing a 12-room building nearby (I'm guessing they're renovating the 'Bates Motel') very quickly in time for filming on Gus Van Sant's remake which is expected to begin very soon. One of the workers there also put to rest the rumours of the film's delay, and said the studio has set the release date for around Christmas (December 4th is the date I'm hearing).
Recent additions to Universal/Imagine Entertainment's remake of Psycho include Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) and Rita Wilson (Now and Then). Forster has been said to be playing 1. Detective Milton Arbogast or 2. A psychologist who describes Norman's illness at the end of the film--I'm not sure which one yet. Wilson however will be playing a co-worker of Marion Crane.
