Everything Just Right
Scully sighed as the silent elevator plummeted downward, taking her to
her and Mulder's basement office. She hated this after- case feeling,
being so tired and letdown. It was all over. Yet another case, come and
gone. She sighed again as the doors silently slid open, letting her out
into the dimly lit hallway. "Dammit, I'm late," she thought, as she
tried to hurry down the hall. But she ended up walking slowly, for she
still had the leg aches from the strenuous activity in their last case.
Mulder had said nothing on the way home from Arcadia. He had silently
accepted her ring when she offered it to him, only an hour out of
Washington. She had no clue where Mulder had gotten it- it didn't
matter. She wasn't willing to give it up until then, not prepared to
take it off, admit it was really over. She liked that feeling, as much
as she hated it. She hated not being able to hate it. That feeling of
stability, of acceptance by the one she loved the most. The man that
meant the world to her. She would give up ANYTHING to know he had some
sort of feelings, some sort of need for her. "Yea right," she thought
sarcastically. "Mulder open up? Perhaps not." Feeling that she would
never get to be with her one and only made her work all the harder to
push him away, to not let him get at her. She would live. Reliving the
past few day, she walked into the office without speaking, not knowing
how to greet him. With the carpet muffling her high- heeled steps, she
entered silently- she would later be grateful for that small gift of
fate.
As she stepped into the room, expecting the normal disarray that was
Mulder, Dana Katherine Scully stopped on shock. Her mouth dropped as her
eyes widened. The office was different. All of Mulder's clutter had
been shifted ever so slightly to accommodate a desk identical to his
own, one bearing a nameplate on which were engraved the words "Federal
Agent Dana K. Scully, M.D." Her desk. Her OWN desk. Right up against
Mulder's so they could work together.
But that wasn't the part that had caused her to smile, the initial
shock gone, tears now swimming in her eyes. It was Mulder. Unbeknownst
of her presence, he hovered over the desk in an almost motherly way,
arranging and re-arranging the brand- new pencil cups and pen holders on
the desk
("My desk, my desk.")
so that when she came in, it would be perfect. She knew him, what he was
thinking. Perfect, it had to be perfect.
He finally must have decided it was as perfect as it was going to get,
because he straightened up with a small smile. Scully watched silently,
admiring him from afar. He still didn't know she was there. He ran his
hand on the desktop, admiring it. She imagined he was imagining her
reaction.
("I love him")
He must have sensed her, in that way that he had. He whirled suddenly, a
slow, embarrassed, but Mulder smile stretching across his face as he
realized she had been there for some time. He had been caught in his act=
of kindness.
Fox William Mulder cleared his throat. "I was thinking, on the way home,
maybe it was time for a change=85. and maybe it was time to get you a
real piece of office furniture. I mean, you couldn't work on that
chair your WHOLE career, could you? Besides, everything must be just
right at least once." His characteristic grin smiled out at her. "He
never can speak when he's caught doing something GOOd," Scully mused.
Her eyes dried as she slowly smiled back, letting her gaze drop from his
eyes to the desk. "It's perfect. It really was a beautiful desk, she
thought, as she took in all its details. Like the one that had been in
their Arcadia house.
("Why did I give him the ring, I could have kept it...")
"Good=85I was going to get you one different than mine, but then I
figured, why? We already know this kind is great..." As she laughed
(rather shakily), he excused himself. He didn't want to be there for
the real surprise
("Please, God, I beg you, let her love it...me")
"I'll go get the coffee. Take it for a test run." He sauntered out of
the room, not aware of her watching him, hoping he looked calm...
She sat down- at HER desk. Ran her hand over the top, like Mulder had.
Admired the quality. Opened the right and left-hand drawer, surprised at
Mulder efficiency at stocking it. Opened the center drawer.
("Oh my God.")
In the drawer, glittering, lay the ring. Shining up at her, it seemed to
wink and laugh at her in the dim office light. She reached down and
picked it up, feeling its weight. A ring. A diamond ring. A note
underneath, in the drawer. She picked it up:
"To my best friend and partner: Will you marry me?"
She stared at it for a time that seemed like hours. Then her tears
smeared the blue ink it was written in, ruining the most precious piece
of paper she had ever received in her life.
"Yes," she whispered to the empty office. "Yes." She had waited for
him. She would be there when he came back, crying, to say one word to
him: "Yes."
Everything just right.
