When one of Bastion's human Sentinels was admitted to the hospital, chaos ensued. Dr. Cecilia Reyes was working on the patient when he awoke and went ballistic. Iceman arrived on the scene in time to help save the lives of everyone in the hospital, including Cecilia, but not before her mutant power inadvertantly kicked in and exposed her secret. On the run with Iceman and Marrow, she found herself swept up in the battlefield of Operation: Zero Tolerance. After bastion and his Operation had been dealt with, she returned to the X-Mansion with and met up with the rest of the X-Men. She had refused Professor Xavier's secret offer to join the X-Men several years before, but despite her resolve to live a normal human life, she found herself among them now. A reluctant partner in the team, her first heroic act was to save the life of Cyclops by removing the bomb Bastion had planted within his body. Still wanting to return to her normal life, she tried to go back to the hospital and continue her job. That very first day, a mutant villain named Pyro was admitted and she was called upon to use her shielding mutant power to remove the bullets from his body while his mutant power burned uncontrollably. Giving in to his pleas, she loosened his straps and he escaped, much to the chagrin of the police and her boss. She was fired on the spot, which she seemed not to regret after the ridicule and prejudice against mutants she had met with from her co-workers all day. She returned to the X-Men, deciding to try their way of life for a while. Finally, Cecilia has decided that the super-hero life is not for her, and has opened a practice up in town not far from the X-Men. She serves the dream as a doctor and an ally to the X-Men, while persuing her own goals in life.
