Lockheed was found by Kitty (Shadowcat) in space, during their first encounter against the Brood. Taking a liking to the young girl, he helped her in the fight against the Brood, then disappeared shortly afterward. While Kitty wondered what had happened to him, he had secretly stowed away on board the X-Men's spacecraft and hitch-hiked home with them. No one knew he was on the mansion grounds until Kitty, left alone in the mansion one winter evening, discovered some evil demons in the basement. Lockheed, who had been hiding there, leapt to her defense and helped her defeat the monsters, and the two have been best friends ever since.

It was Kitty who dubbed him Lockheed, naming him after the company who built the X-Men's Blackbird Jet. Not knowing anything of his race or his origin, kitty and the rest of the team nonetheless accepted him as their friend and team-member. He remained a staunch ally when the Britain-based team of Excalibur formed, following Kitty dutifully.

It wasn't revealed until much later that Lockheed had deserted his race and his betrothed by taking off with Kitty. Because of his love for her, and his former betrothed's forgiveness of his actions, his race allowed him to return to Earth and stay with Kitty, on the condition that he could never again return to them. Exiled by his, Lockheed was still happy, feeling that his place was here on Earth with his friend Kitty and the rest of the X-Men. None of the X-Men are aware that this trial ever transpired, or what he sacrificed to be with them.

Lockheed has revealed that he can speak, though he has never done so with Kitty or any of the other X-Men. The only person he revealed this to was Kitty's former boyfriend, Pete Wisdom, whom Lockheed strongly disliked. He seemed to reveal this to Pete only to frustrate him further, because none of Excalibur believed Pete's tale of the talking dragon. Lockheed seemed extremely jealous of Pete's as his rival for Kitty's affections, though suprisingly, he seems to be encouraging her former romance with Colossus.

One can assume that with Kitty's recent return to the X-Men, Lockheed has once again loyally followed his friend, becoming part of the team himself, though he has yet to be seen within the mansion.
