The man known only as Logan has a long, and complicated past, one which even he finds difficult to untangle. What is known about his past are mostly small fragments; that he spent time as a slave at some point, that later he learned the art of being a ninja from his mentor, Ogun, and even later he turned to the honorable path of the Samurai rather than follow the ways of the ninja. He also spent time serving with S.H.I.E.L.D. during World War II, at Nick Fury's side, and once worked side by side with his arch-enemy Sabretooth during an undercover operation for a Canadian intelligence called Department H. But his true story begins when he was kidnapped by an unknown group of people and forever transformed as they proceeded with an experimental project called Weapon X; bonding adamantium to his very bone structure. He was apparently selected because of his rapid, natural healing factor (regeneration), the only thing which might allow him to survive the process. Logan remembers little of this time period, unfortunately, only bits and pieces. It is known that his feral side took over after the experiment was successfully performed, and he destroyed the complex and most of its inhabitants, escaping into the wilds of Canada. It was here that Heather Hudson, (who later would become Vindicator of Alpha Flight), discovered him. He tried to attack her in his feral state, but passed out at her feet. She took him home and helped him heal. Her husband James Hudson, (Guardian of Alpha Flight), took a particular interest in his this super-powered being, and when he recovered, Logan tentatively joined with the team Alpha Flight as Weapon X. The Canadian government gave him this name (one which oddly echoes the title of the experiment performed on him), but he always preferred Wolverine as his code name.

It was here, in Canada, that Professor Xavier discovered the clawed superhero, and recruited him to help his team of X-Men, who were being held captive by the living island known as Krakoa. Logan agreed to help, and later agreed to stay on with the new team of X-Men, much to the dismay of the Canadian intelligence group who ran Alpha Flight. They made an attempt to recapture him, feeling they had claim to him, and the X-Men sped to his rescue, reclaiming him from their hands. It was a rough time for Logan in his early years with the team. He and Cyclops, along with other members of the team, clashed head on many times. They did not agree with his methods. Logan was a killer, had been killing for many years before he met them, and the group was distinctly uncomfortable with his attitude about it. Only Storm, Nightcrawler and Phoenix reached out to him during this time, and he developed deep friendships with them all, though his feelings for Phoenix went a bit beyond that. The mutual attraction they felt for each other was doomed, however, as her heart belonged to Cyclops, the then-leader of the team. Still, their bond of friendship remains special to this day.

It wasn't until the X-Men ventured to Japan that they began to learn anything of this mysterious and enigmatic warrior. It was here that he revealed his name, Logan, and his familiarity with the culture and ways of the Samurai and ninja. It was also here that he found true love, in the form of an elegant Japanese woman named Mariko. Their relationship lasted a through many years, and one broken engagement. On the day of their wedding, the ceremony was thwarted by Viper and Silver Samurai. After Rogue and Wolverine defeated them, the ceremony was to go on as intended. But Mariko turned away from Logan, proclaiming him unworthy at the crucial moment of answer. Her reaction was due to the meddling of Mastermind. They later recounciled, and continued to see one another on occasion, but their relationship was never quite the same. Logan later rescued a small child named Akiko from a fallen building, and turned her over to Mariko's care. He referred to her as his daughter after a time, though there was no blood bond between them. Logan did sire a son however, on a remote island with a woman from a native tribe which inhabited it. He is not aware of his sons existence as yet however, as he departed the island before the child was born. Seeming to have a certain soft spot for youngsters, he formed a tight bond with the X-Mens then youngest member, Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat), and came to her rescue when she was possessed by the spirit of his former mentor, Ogun. He later formed a similar bond with Jubilee, another young X-Man who joined after Kitty had long departed the team.

The battles were many, but Logan continued to prevail, by now having become a veteran and full-fledged member of the team. Perhaps his greatest achievement came when he and the X-Men were swept into space one night in their dreams. Transported to the Citadel of Light and Shadow by a villain named Horde, they were coerced to enter the Citadel and brave its tests to retrieve the Crystal of Ultimate Vision which lay within. Only Logan alone escaped the tantalizing visions of the Crystal and reached it…only to meet Horde again. The villain ripped out his heart and killed him. But for the drop of blood which sprayed from his body and fell upon the Crystal, he would have been forever dead. But the power of the crystal was such that from that one drop of blood, it recreated Wolverine exactly as he had been. He destroyed Horde and discovered the God-like power the Crystal held. He was tempted to use it, but quickly realized that he was no God. He surrendered the power of the Crystal, and thus passed the ancient test of the Citadel. The human race was allowed to continue to evolve and grow because of Logans actions. Other races had come and tried before, and failed, their races forever frozen at that point of their evolution. Logan was the savior of the entire human race, man and mutant alike, that night.

The number of trials far outweighed the triumphs though, and they were many…perhaps more than any man should have to endure. His continuous battles with Sabretooth, confronted with the lies of his past, finding that everything he believed to be true was, in fact, only memory implants. Mariko was murdered by one of his enemies, poisoned with blow fish toxin right before his very eyes. She died in his arms, and part of him died with her that day. His daughter, Akiko, disappeared, and many ghosts from his past continued to return, ever haunting him, along with new faces. Yuriko, Lady Deathstrike was one of these. Believing that Logan had stolen her fathers formula for lacing the human bones with adamantium, she underwent a similar process, giving up her humanity for cyborg parts and adamantium claws to match Wolverines. Her plot was for revenge against the man who had stolen her fathers work. Logan of course, had not done so, but she refused to believe him, and continues to plague him to this day. Perhaps the very worst trial was when he confronted Magneto and the villain proceeded to rip the admantium from his body through his pores. Logan very nearly died from the traumatic experience, Jean's (Phoenix) love the only thing which brought him back and gave him the will to survive. Now without his adamantium to protect him, his healing factor giving out on him, he decided to leave the team for a while again, one of the many exits he had made throughout the years. But he returned once again, battling with his feral side for control, its presence empowered by the trauma his body was going through. Eventually, he regained control, and has returned to the team as the man they had come to know, albeit without his adamantium laced bones.

Most recently, Wolverine has honored an old debt to a dead friend by marrying the villainess Viper. The reasons for her wanting this marriage have yet to be revealed. Just after the wedding, Sabretooth reared his ugly head, now sporting adamantium of his own, and attempted to kill Viper, Shadowcat and Wolverine himself. Wolverine won out in the end, as always, with a little help from his friends. Still armed with his incredible strength, endurance, claws and healing factor, he continues to fight alongside the X-Men, his only true family.

Strength level: While Wolverine may be of an advanced age, he possesses the normal human strength of a man in his prime with his height and build who engages in intensive regular exercise. While possessing the adamantium skeleton, Wolverine's strength was increased to the human maximum, making him capable of lifting (pressing) 800 lbs.

Known superhuman powers: Wolverine is a mutant with a number of enhancements to his physiology.

Wolverine possesses heightened senses, making him capable of seeing things at a maximum distance greater than that of a normal human. His hearing is enhanced in a similar manner, and he is able to recognize people and objects by scent, even if that person or object is hidden. Logan can use these enhanced senses to track anyone, with an impressive degree of success.

Wolverine possesses retractable bone claws that are housed in his forearms. At will Wolverine can release these claws through his skin between the knuckles on each hand. The skin between the knuckles tears and bleeds, but bleeding is quickly halted by his healing factor. The claws are naturally sharp and tougher than that of normal human bone structure. This allows Wolverine to be able to cut through most types of flesh and natural materials. (Note: While Wolverine possessed his adamantium skeleton, his claws were able to cut through almost any material without any fear of damage to the claws.)

Lastly, Wolverine possesses an accelerated healing factor based on his physiology. While most normal humans heal injuries over a long period of time, Wolverine's healing factor speeds up that natural process. Wolverine's natural healing has been advanced to the point where he can heal extensive injuries (such as broken limbs) in a matter of hours to days. This factor gives him a higher resistance to poisons and toxins, and he can recover from almost any injury. The more extensive the injury, the longer the healing time will be.

Wolverine is not immortal, however. If the injuries are extensive enough, especially if they result in the loss of vital organs, large amounts of blood, and/or loss of physical form (such as having flesh burned away by fire or acid), Logan can die.

Wolverine, again due to his healing factor, has an enhanced resistance to disease, as well as an extended life span. Despite Wolverine's chronological age, he is still as healthy and physically fit as a man in his prime. Abilities: Due to his extensive training as a CIA operative, a Samurai, and as a member of the Weapon X program, Wolverine is a master of multiple forms of martial arts, weapons, and vehicles. He is also a trained expert in computers, explosives, and assassination techniques.
